DO NOT PANIC!!!
THIS is pretty cool. When I did some searching, I discovered that a fair number of universities have shooting facilities and teams. University of Michigan has had a competition team since the early 1900's.
Ten years ago, our local high school had a rifle team, sadly it is no more.
I have long believed that there is a need in every school curriculum for basic firearms safety training. Starting at about age 10, kids need to understand what a gun is and how to be safe around them. Easily done by any local PD Range Officer, and it would remove some of the myth and mystery surrounding guns, maybe offset some of the action movie stupidity that kids see.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

When I was a recruiter in Owesboro, KY, I assisted the JRTC with their shooting program. Not certain if they still shoot or not... I agree- it would help a great deal if more young people were exposed to firearms in order to gain an actual respect for the tool.

When I was a student at Penn State way back in the early 1980's, I took riflery as a phys-ed class. Three hours per week for a whole year I got to go to the basement of the Mary Beaver White building and shoot for an hour. We were fortunate to have the former PSU competition shooting team Anschutz rifles to use. Since this was a small class, once assigned a rifle, that same rifle was yours for the entire course( I took riflery I and II) so once I set up all the adjustable points on the stocks, it was set for me the way I wanted for the duration, no one else shot the gun during that time. For those not familiar with these guns, they are the kind used in the Olympics. What a fun time that was. I was taking a heavy course load that year, loaded with science classes, and to have three hours per week, right in the middle of the day to be able to go and shoot was so relaxing. I think I had to pay $10 for the ammo per course, targets were included, talk about cheap shooting! This was back during the days when the Division of Civilian Marksmanship was still in existance. We tested and competed amongst ourselves and earned rankings and medals accordingly. We shot standing, kneeling and prone, learned gun safety, cleaning, shooting basics and advanced breathing control and how to spot for a co shooter. I remember the first time we shot in the dark with only the targets illuminated, that was very strange at first, but after a time, the low light helped you see the tiny targets thru the round peep sites. You of course had to be able to shoot proficiently to pass the course, but nobody flunked. In fact most did quite well. Funny thing is I just found my DCM Expert Marksman medal the other day and its sitting on my desk while I type this.
This was wonderful experience that I wish all kids could enjoy, but in the climate today, that course would probably get you expelled or worse.
I agree with Steve, firearms training should be available to all kids at some point in their schooling, it would greatly reduce the problems we are seeing today IMO.
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

My Gun Club, http://www.parkersportsman.com/ , has a 4H air gun team that uses our facility for training and practice. In fact, one young lady from that group placed very high in a recent national competition. We also often have members from the Tarleton State University Rifle Team use our range(s).
