So Im looking for my first gun for home defense, have been thinking about it for quite sometime (since the birth of my daughter 2 years ago).  Most recent my wife stated that she heard Florida was the 3rd highest state in child abduction and since I always have to do my own research I came across this site http://www.ygoy.com/index.php/child-abduction-statistics/ awful stuff.

I'm currently deciding on the weapon for home defense. A friend suggested a shotgun, and another friend made a valid point, "Why protect your family at home but leave them vulnerable outside your home." So ive been doing some research on the laws and legislations in my state, except all this lingo is very hard for me to grasp so I figured someone here can break it down for me.

I immigrated from my native country (Brazil) almost 20 years ago, Im 31 been living here since 13. No felonies, no arrests, my record is squicky-clean, as Ive had to get my fingerprints done several times for work.  Im a greencard holder, havent gotten around to do my citizenship yet (heard its like $1000 to file for it).

So my question is this, what are the laws in regards to buying a gun and getting a concealed weapons permit?

Thanks for your help.

This varies from state to state, however I think Florida is pretty straightforward. Start with your local PD for info.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I'm not sure on the Resident status part but it's easy to get in Fla. other than that. You just have to take a approved Gun Safety Class, Get finger printed fill out the application and naturally pay the $140 filing fee. Thats it any Gun shop with a range has the classes and they only take a few hours. I hope this helps

You're good to go with a greencard and residency in the state for more than 90 days.

A little late, but my 2 cents.

My wife and I both have concealed carry permits.  One, or both, of us is armed at all times.

My wife's home-protection weapon of choice is a "porch sweeper".  She's small, and likes the Mossberg 20 ga, pistol grip pump shotgun, with the tube loaded (No 3 buckshot) and the barrel empty.  The sound of racking the pump in the dark should be enough to change all but the most addled minds.
