It will shoot the 44magnum round but it is chambered for the 445 Supermag round. The 445 is a cartridge developed by the late Elgin Gates for IHMSA shooting. It is a 44 mag round lengthened to 1.610 inches, it usese the same diameter bullet as the 44 magnum though. It is in effect a magnum, magnum. Do a search on it here and on google and you will get lots of info.

Probably not an AGS- My SN# starts with a "Z". Could be a 7445 which was coated- it'll be a great hunting pistol. The 445 uses .429 diameter bullets, just like the .44. It prefers heavier bullets though, in my experience, although 240 gr. do fine too.

Does it look like this:
edit to add: I just saw your picture, same gun, and the one shown above is #1. Strictly speaking, I was the second owner, and I bought it NIB unfired. Actually my son owns this gun, the day we took it to the range for the first time out was amazing. People clustered around us to find out where the "thunder" was coming from on the pistol range.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

When my son was home on leave (after the NAG deployment) we were in my favorite DW Happy Place, where they know me well. The guy says "you need to see this". NIB unfired, they had sold it a number of years earlier straight from the Factory. The original owner never shot it, traded it back in.
My son saw the S/N and jumped fast. Pretty quickly, a Guardian Angel (Jody) sent out some brass, Andrew loaded of some ammo, and the rest is history

Just to update, I picked up the brother a couple years ago #14 and found the box marked in black marker AGS. I then found out thru Davidson Wholesale that it was produced july 7 1992 as a AGS prototype. this is info I recieved over the phone because of the hang tag from Davidson. Most info of the Dan Wessons is info that this forum has put to gether by reading between the ines like this. Mine came with the box papers and fired case. Enjoy yours it will be a joy to shoot and will always hold its value. I believe all the nitrate finish is a factory option that was applied over a stainless gun, you will see a s casting mark under the crane when cylinder is open. fyi
