Okay, here's the deal. I have been hosting a shoot for the members of
Specialty Pistols website since 2006 (we missed one year) and we are
having one this year also. I will now make it a combined SP/DWF shoot
for this year. Some of our members here are also SP members and vice versa, so why not get together for some fun shooting.
We will be shooting 4 days, Wednesday through Saturday, May 4-7
This event is for ANY SP member and ANY Dan Wesson Forum member, newbie or otherwise. It is basically a chance to learn about handgun silhouette, meet other SP and DWF members and have a great time. ANY handgun you have, bring it, but NO rifles. Even though it may not be suitable for silhouette, we have targets for you to shoot at 300 meters.
There will be 200+ targets available to shoot, including all the IHMSA categories except Air Pistol. We have Big Bore, .22LR, Field Pistol, Half-Scale and Fifth Scale. Four days of steel shooting, and it's FREE.
The range is 35 miles south of Cincinnati, just off I-75, located at Lloyds Wildlife Management Area. Crittenden is actually in Grant County, not Crittenden County. The Northern Kentucky Straight Shooters is the host club (my range). Here's a pic of part of the range
More info will be added shortly. If you have any questions, please ask here.

A wonderful invite and thank you! I will wait and see what happens! I am wondering and need to research travel (road) with fire arms! Although I don't think I can make it this year it will be something to look forward to in coming years.
Is there onsite camping or motels near?

In virtually all instances it is legal to safely transport firearms across state lines for sporting and competition purposes.

I would certainly investigate further, but unloaded, locked in a case, separate from ammunition, in a locked trunk of your car...
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Can you list nearby towns for hotels?
I am going to try and make this work. I have 4lbs of powder and 2000 primers.. just looking for bullets!

This question comes up every year, so I'll just repeat it here:
"what do you consider to bring along to shoot, caliber wise?"
Any handgun you have! We have targets for .22LR, any normal pistol and
revolver rounds, single shots, you name it. Scopes or iron sights,
doesn't matter. As far as calibers go, anything that doesn't do target
damage…basically about 2500 fps or less muzzle velocity won't hurt
them. There are a couple steel gongs, manhole-cover size and
dinner-plate size, at 300 meters…shoot whatever you want at those, if
you have a big one. The gongs were popular for the 6.5x284 and some of
the speedier 6mm's.
Some guidelines for centerfire:
.221 Fireball is fine with 50 grain and up loads
.223 Remington needs to be downloaded some…usually 60 grain bullets or heavier, keep below 2500 fps
6mm's...great with downloaded varmint bullets, 95-107 grain loads ok if kept
below 2500 fps…my 243 win uses 31 grains h4895 and 100 grain bullets
6.5mm to .45-70 should be ok
any of the TCU series, BR series, 7-30 waters, .30-30's, .243/260/7mm-08
and .308's, .35 remington, .350 rem mag, .444 marlin…any wildcats that
fall within the limits.
If you have anything specific in mind I haven't covered, just post here, I'll let you know if it's ok.

There are hotels close by, and a campground north of Crittenden, called
"Oak Creek Campground". Becky and Steve stayed there last year. Camping on the range
itself is not allowed.
The agenda for Wednesday through Saturday is…load and shoot! This is a
very informal event, you can shoot at whatever targets you want to at
any time. We will shoot until we need to go down and repaint targets, so
we'll take breaks every now and then. No timed shooting periods. You
can shoot from any position you want, including benchrest setups.
After each day, dinner will be at the Golden Corral, but I'm not paying for you guys.
The range has NO drinkable water…water jugs are highly recommended. There
is a clubhouse about 500 yards away, you can't drink the water there,
but there are bathroom facilities. Bring food if you want…the town is a
mile away, and they have several fast-food places there including a
Subway. Food runs can be made during the day. If you want to bring your
own grill, that is fine also, but don't expect me to be the chef.

No hotels at Crittenden itself, since it is a very small village.
Closest place is Dry Ridge, KY, about 7 miles south of Crittenden.
Hampton Inn 859-823-0009 Rates from $75.65
Micro-Tel 1-800-824-2000 Rates $39.99
All rates are as of today, not including any discounts you may have. All
hotels are new, as this area has really built up in the last few years.
Dry Ridge has an Outlet Mall, same area, lots of places to eat, including
all the normal fast-food joints, Subway, Waffle House, DQ, KFC Pizza
Hut, Shoney's, Country Grill, Cracker Barrel.
Next closest is Florence, KY, about 15 miles north of Crittenden. This is a large area, hotels and eateries far too numerous to list…just about anywhere you
want to stay is in that area. Also, Florence Mall is located there…fairly large mall.
Lots of guys stayed at the Motel 6 in Florence. $33.99. Ph. 859-283-0909
And NO, you can't stay at my place.

Directions to the Range
From Florence area:
Go South on Interstate 71/75, common road across the river from Cincinnati, stay on I-75 Lexington where they both split up, about 10 miles south of Florence. About 5 miles past the split is Crittenden Exit 166 and State Route 491 . Take this exit, turn LEFT across the interstate til road ends in a T (State Route 25) at stoplight: Turn RIGHT, go thru village of Crittenden. Go past Grant County Park on the right (the end of town). Right where the speed limit ends, turn LEFT on State Route 491. There are railroad tracks right there also. About 200 yards past the tracks, turn LEFT at the first road. You'll see the clubhouse there. Follow the gravel road to the left of the clubhouse…range is about 500 yards away.
From Dry Ridge area:
Go NORTH on Interstate 75 to the Crittenden Exit 166 and State Route 491. Take this exit, turn RIGHT til road ends in a T (State Route 25)…turn RIGHT , follow directions as in above.

basically a practice/fun day with periodic breaks to reset and repaint
targets.
What to Bring: Guns and ammo…DUH. Whatever shooting stuff you need, lawn chairs for idle chitchat or spotting.
The range has NO drinkable water…water jugs are highly recommended. There

Oh, forgot the earlier question...How much ammo to bring?
About three times as much as you think you might need...we are shooting all day, for 4 days. 500 rounds per day would work. You will be able to try others guns also, so bring some extra for that. It's kind of like a big gun show where you have no money to spend. You get to see and handle all kinds of firearms, with the added bonus of shooting them also, as much as you want.
It's hard for me to decide which guns to bring, so I haul a LOT of them with me, plus 1000's of rounds of ammo. I may not shoot them all, but there are there for whatever I get the urge to shoot.

Wow I didnt realize it was comming up that fast!!!
This weekend is a local "meet and greet", my son and I are doing that, as I have committed to it.
So I wont be there on Wednesday... but I might sneak out out on Thursday or Friday. I want to make sure I got plenty of time to shoot! Boss is gonna kill me as I just took four days off last week. (two days on the gulf coast just to play!, and two days to drive my mom to TX and back for a doctors appointment). Ah well, state job... if they wanted loyalty, they would treat us all a dern bit better. Just heard after 23 years, I will be made a bi-monthly employee in preparation for us punching clocks. I am just counting the months to retirement. 12 months if I dont eat up all my leave first ... 16 if I do!
I just had 1000 rounds made up.. I still haven't bought my own loader yet... but I guess i am just gonna have to. Just no getting around it these days. Any one want to bring theres and teach me at night in the hotel lobby???
