The difference between a 12 & W12 is that the 12 is the earlier original version. Shortly into production, they changed it to a W12...and also the 11 to a D11. Presumably the "D & W" represented "Dan Wesson".
Both models were available in .38 Spl or .357 Mag, however the .357 appears to be far more common. I have a D11 in .38 Spl, for example & have only seen maybe two or three others like it.
