I propose we try to come up with some DW trivia questions and see who can get the right answers... Smart guys may have to keep quiet for a few days ...
I'm not sure how long we can play this since we are a pretty knowledgeable group !!! I'll start off with this bit of trivia...
What is the purpose of the knurled section shown on the DW barrel below? (If you know already, just shoot me a PM and let others guess)

OK, I'm going to be the first party pooper.
The Knurled section is to make little boys ask questions!!!
Just teasing.
My guess is to keep the barrel from turning in the frame and shroud when you tighten the barrel nut???
Happyness is a Hot DW and a pile of used brass!!! Rich

I don't think any of my barrels are like this... so I'm clueless.
None of my 357 barrels have this either. Do I get 2 guesses?
(1) For a vise "clamp", maybe to hold the barrel while the rifling is created?
(2) To hold some bushing to center the barrel into a shroud?

I have a barrel like that in a compensated shroud. I don't know the purpose but have wondered about it on occasion. GJ44
Keep wondering…. I'm going to give you the foul ball on that one…

Hmm, that was a foul ball, ehh.
The ribs are there to create turbulence on the exhaust gases to minimize chances of the barrel locking up?
EDIT: To hold a Gas Check?

I believe these are found only on 357 SuperMag barrels, at least the only ones I have are 357SM. Perhaps it's to distinguish them from normal .357 barrels??

Edit: No that's wrong. One of my 445 barrels has it also. 🙁
I have 2 357SM barrels and neither has this......
Is it from a fixed barrel or something ?

I'm with blacktop on this it is used to thghten the fit on the fixed barrel models and shrouds! I for one have never seen this on any of my DW's. is that ball 4
I'm kind of surprised this one is as hard as it is.... then again, I have some odd DW stuff. There are probably quite a few of these on the DWF, guys just don't notice.
Blacktop and Pops2.... back to the minor leagues !!!

OK, I give in and will take a WAG. The knurling is to center the barrel in the shroud when tightened to maintain a uniform space around the barrel. Similar to the boss around super-mag barrels.
LB
P.S. Whatever it was for must have been an experiment of sorts as most barrels don't have it.
Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.
