Its so that when assembling in the dark (to hunt w/ EWK f.o. sights), you don't have to get your pinky finger stuck in the chamber end to figure out which way to install the barrel.
Sheesh- that was easy- give us something challenging huh?

OK--we're at the 24 hr point... Thanks for all the responses--some good ones for sure. To be honest I don't know the reason the knurling is in place--we'll discuss this in depth after you see DW's answer...
I have 3 of these barrels -- and they are all installed in COMP barrels...
I've compared these to "normal" DW barrels, and I don't see the reason for the difference. Once you install the barrel nut, the barrel is "sealed" from that point back to the frame. the only empty area is in front of the crown towards the comp vents.

OK, so there is really no reason for the straight cut knurls except for IDENTIFICATION for Compensated Shrouds.
Is there any difference between compensated barrels and vented barrels??? What would happen if you didn't use a compensated barrel in a compensated shroud??? This opens up all kinds of questions.

If I'm not mistaken, the comp shrouds started in Palmer. Correct me if I'm wrong, 'cuz I've been plenty wrong lately.
My 445 Palmer comp barrel is knurled, you can sorta see it here. Did Norwich continue that too? I agree with Mox, that the barrel should be sealed off once the nut is installed. I wouldn't mind hearing the reasoning behind this myself.

I've got question #2 lined up -- but let's hash on this comp barrel thing over the weekend
I pulled out the mics and checked one comp barrel vs a non comp barrel. Both are the same diameter--appear to have the same threaded areas, etc.
I'll take a pic of my knurled barrels for comparison tomorrow-- I have two 44 and one 357.

I pulled out a Norwich comp. barrel and shroud and the barrel is not knurled. They were new as a set from the factory. I also checked a .445 Palmer and it is knurled.

Ok, Here's the answer I got from a former DW exec...
"My thoughts would b the knurling may be intended (if the tolerances are true) to help prevent the bbl. from turning when tightening the bbl. nut so the cyl.gap is easier achieve. Check the length to see if they made the bbls. longer or shorter or thicker to make them specific to the comp. shroud. My take would be for marketing (MORE BBL. SALES)"
I'd have to go with the marketing answer, since I found no discernable difference between the std barrels and the Comp ones.
