Did you recently buy the gun? There has to me bore to the story than just a defective cylinder. DW's have a reputation for being very stout & are one of the least likely to have a problem like this.
If you need a new frame too, you're pretty much looking for another gun. Do you have any pics of this thing?

+1 hope ur OK.
Was it an expert who came to the conclusion it was a defective cylinder?
I would think a factory defect would have shown up when the factory
tested the gun with proof loads before it shipped out.
Have you contacted Hornady about this yet ? Here latley all the gun
magazines are loaded with recalls from major ammo manufactures
for over pressured rounds.

+1 On the hope you are OK.
I shoot Hornady's regularly in my 44V, can you tell us what load it was?
Also, as Charger Fan says, DWs are known for being very strong. I fire some very stout loads in my 44 (Buffalo Bore Heavy 44 +P+). Their web site says roughly 1400 fps and 1480 ft-lbs for my 4" barrel for the +P+ load (340 gr), though not sure what PRESSURE is generated....
+2 on seeing some photos.....

Let's see some pictures of a blown up DW Model 44.
Was this a NIB Model 44, never fired before?
Not saying this didn't happen, but a 25 year old gun does not easily develop a previously undetected flawed cylinder that blows up on factory ammo, except maybe a squib load that lodged in the forcing cone, causing the next round to blow out the top strap and cylinder.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Anything can happen I know. People that make these statements on their first post make me wonder. And there has been no reply. I would be forthcoming and tell you everything I know about the pistol and load and who may have had it before. That's if you really wont to find the answer to the puzzle. His thread doesn't hold water yet!
Here is a pic of one of my favorite pistols designs. A S&W 629 that blew up because of bad Chinese ammo. It looks scary doesn't it. I would want to know why!

The "Chinese ammo" story has been debunked on many forums.
Yep, not too much chinese ammo running around in brass cases with JHP's in them...
I have all the pics of that gun--may have even posted them on the forum somewhere--has the topstrap with scope attached blown off.

What causes guns to blow like this? To my naive eye, it looks like three shells went off at once?
Common theory is that the center cartridge erupts(double load, etc) and shears off the two side cases which causes them to erupt due to compression/flash of center cartridge.
