Expensive Education:   Getting back into firearm ownership and replacing what I had before kids.     Last week, I learned the hard way to pay attention to the details.   I bought a 15-2 Pistol Pack from seller, and turns out to be a Model 14(?), based on fixed rear sight, and gun shop employee, that I assume knows more than I.

Which brings me to the question: Do I sell the entire pistol pack?   or sell gun only and buy a 15-2 frame to add to pistol pack?    Add to this question the detail that I already ordered a 10\" barrel from cz-usa.

GB Seller Descriptions:   Since I am now looking at a possible replacement, I am seeing descriptions of VH barrels when they are not, a .22LR listed as a Model 15, etc;   What bothers me is these sellers have hundreds or thousands of positive ratings.   You would think they could get it right?   I know. I know. "Caveat emptor".    But, I hate to see the others suffer the same fate as I.

Are there any Books or Documents out there for definitive information and knowledge?

Thanks.

If the rear sight is fixed it is a model 14-2, assuming it's not a pork chop gun.  In that case, it would be a 14.  15 and 15-2 have adjustable rear sights.

My best advice is read this, post pictures, and ask questions.  The members on this forum are always willing to help.rn rn

Beware sellers, gun shop employees, and gunsmiths concerning Dan Wessons. Most long time forum members are extremely knowledgeable about Dans and will steer you right. You now know the seller and gun shop owner are ignorant but rwsem and Scorpio are among the most knowledgeable. If your gun is a porkchop or a fixed sight gun or both you should demand a refund from the seller. If it is, a fixed sight 14 a 15-2 frame will not shoot accurately with the shrouds. If it is a porkchop 14 your 10" BA coming will not fit the frame without an EWK adapter if you can find one and the 10" will still not shoot to point of aim.

The logical conclusion if you don't get a refund is to buy another correct 15-2 pistol pack and enjoy both. goodluckdwas

Hello Scout,

The best source for factual printed information, factory manuals, ads, catalogs, magazine articles etc is this Forum. For $50 dollars you can become a supporter for 2 years. This gives you access to the most complete library of Dan Wesson information that exists.

I belong to many online forums and the DWF is honestly the best. You will not find the usual 50-50 mix of braggarts, bullies, and pseudo intellectuals VS genuine experts. I would estimate that 90 % of the replies is truly expert advise with  10% falling in the category of educated personal opinion.

The DWF is smaller than many other forums so it may take a few days to get answers....but it is worth the wait.

It is easy to sign up and you will have immediate access to all of the files if you remit electronically. Go to the top of the page and click "shop"   It will be a great Xmas gift to yourself.  dwf

I appreciate the information.   Updated original post with pics.

Follow-up questions to previous posts thread information:

Scorpio; If it is a 14-2, are the 14-2 barrels compatible with a 15-2?

rwsem; Thank you.   Reread it.   Back to the above question based on 2nd-to-last paragraph in Jody's post: "The pork chop shroud was redesigned to the current style when the model designation was changed to 14-2 and 15-2."

ALL;   If not compatible, how do I tell a 14-2 Barrel Shroud from a 15-2 Barrel shroud without a side-by-side comparison?

Ole Dog; Ideally, I would love to enjoy both, but a 715 is on my "wish list", so for financial and storage space reasons, I am limited to the 15-2, which is what I am replacing.

hugelk; I will gladly become a supporter, as I know the value of good information.   I may have to wait simply because this $$$$ mistake(?) and procrastinated maintenance of family's automobiles.   Thanks

Scout, as Ron said, that's a 14-2.  The 15-2 shroud will fit, buy you're going to need to play around with different front sight blades to get it to shoot to point of aim.  The 15-2 shrouds are taller and sit higher when attached to the frame.  I'm going to try to post a pic of a 14- and 15- side by side so you can see the difference.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Sorry, my phone inverted the picture, can't seem to rotate it.

Anyway, the pic shows a blue 14-2 8 inch shroud and a 715 8 inch shroud, the same as a 15-2.  Note the top rib differences.  See how the blue one is lower at the frame end than the stainless.  They will both fit either frame, but the sight heights will be different and thus the point of impact.

You have to be careful on GB or any other site like it. I learned my lesson the hard way on a Sig P226 frame that ended up actually being a P229 frame. The seller mixed up the pics on two different frames, but had the correct box pics with the model number on it, so I would have been ok, but I jumped on it, and he didn't realize he had sent me the "wrong" frame until I called him and told him. I ended up getting a couple of P229 mags for my trouble and then found a nearly perfect P229 slide in .40. It made a nice looking 2 tone gun and shot fine, but I have hand issues and .40 is not fun for me to shoot much, so I listed the gun and mags on GB, and got my opening bid, that's it. So I wound up losing about $200 on the deal and the buyer scored big. Since then I've been super careful and have had no more drama.

I just bought a ruger single six off GB, advertised as a 22lr and when I got it finally, it was actually a 22magnum. I was planning on looking for a magnum cylinder anyway but still the seller should have taken more care. In looking at more ruger SS listings on GB, I have spotted more sellers mislabeling the 22lr / 22magnum calibers on the guns they are selling.  Caveat emptor my DW friends.

Tim,

If it is one of the early Single Sixes that were 22 magnum Only, you may have stumbled into a big bargain.

My old pawn and Gun shop owner buddy told me, "never educate the sellers." I have gotten many real deals from unknowledgable sellers on GB. wink
