Hello DWF Members,

As a Floridian and a newly gun owner, Ive been studying the laws of conceal carry, as my state (FL) does not allow open carry.

The fear I immediately developed was that of the "printing dilemma"  whereby law abiding residents fear being prosecuted when our weapons "print". As most residents of Florida know, the summers here can get pretty hot, allowing few choices of clothing in order to carry.

A ban on the Open-Carry prohibition in Florida would allow both the ability to Open Carry, and what I think will be more common, the ability to Conceal Carry without fear of "printing".

Aparently according to my research newly appointed Florida Gov. Rick Scott is joining the fight to move forward and reinstate the Open Carry freedoms in Florida.

Heres a quote from Florida Gov. Rick Scott: “As a member of the NRA and a hunter, I’m a strong supporter of the Second Amendment and I will protect our fundamental right to keep and bear arms. Florida is one of only seven states with wide prohibition on carrying an unconcealed firearm. Repealing the ban on unconcealed or Open Carry will eliminate practical and constitutional problems in Florida.”

Heres the entire article: http://www.examiner.com/gun-rights-in-orlando/janet-reno-s-ban-on-open-carry-florida

Again I believe that even if the Open Carry ban is lifted I will still conceal 99.9% of the time, I just wont, as many Conceal Carry members stated, be uncomfortable by planning my wardrobe around my weapon, dress uncomfortably, or spend hundreds of dollars on special holsters.

Questions:

1) Does your state allow you to Open Carry? (chances are yes, 43 states currently do lol)

2) Do you Open Carry or Conceal Carry?

3) Do you believe Open Carry is a good idea?

4) Do you believe in the "Open Carry = Less Crime" debate?

Curious to know the consensus here.

Sincerely,

                    Rod

1) Yes.

2) Neither, not yet.

3) No. In a situation where you may need to use your gun for self defense, I don't think it's a good idea to broadcast to the bad guys that you have a gun. It sorta makes you a target. If the bad guys don't know you are carrying, the element of surprise is on your side.

4) Yes/no. It would equal less crime, if bad guys think there may be a few people in the room who are armed & will fight back. However, as I said above, a freaked-out bad guy may shoot you first & make his demands second, if he knows you are carrying.

So I think the open carry thing is sort of a double-edged sword...however, I firmly believe that armed citizens in general, DO equal less crime!Range Time Providing they know how to use the darned thing.Wink

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

MS = YES

2) Do you Open Carry or Conceal Carry?

Neither.. yet

3) Do you believe Open Carry is a good idea?

currently yes. I definitely think CCW is a good idea.

4) Do you believe in the "Open Carry = Less Crime" debate?

 currently yes

And yes I am hedging by saying currently. Open carry could turn around and bite us, by having "thugs" carry and thus intimidate the general populace. Generally, most of the open or conceal I see and or know of is off duty law enforcement or military. They are trained and generally mentally well adapted to deal with the consequences of their decision to carry.   I will not carry until I obtain a CCW license from the state. I am pushong for my wife to get even before me and even my 19 yo daughter.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

 Just my take on this,

Most thugs, criminal's or bad guys tend to  attack easy, timid targets.

But if he/she is freaked out, be it drugs or just disturbed it's probably

not going to matter whether I'm holding undercover or standing there

with a M60. I'm sure there are times that a thug might come in guns

ablazing and take out who he thinks is a threat but not likley. Not anymore

than hitting the circle K with the local PD there getting his coffee. They

would look for an easier take or just come back in 15.

I wouldn't mind open carry at all.

Although 9 times out of 10, I would still carry concealed, there are times when it is so much more convenient to open carry.

I don't think open carry is a bad idea at all, provided you don't flaunt it.  That's my #1 beef with a lot of people that OC.  They act like it's something special.  Act like a normal person, dont draw attention to it, and 90% of the people you encounter won't notice you are carrying a pistol on your hip.

Hope is not a course of action
