i bought a hogue grip for my 44 over the weekend came home and put it on and tightened it up and of course the hammer would not pull all the way back so i started lossening it up finally get it to work and now the grip is loose if i tighten up any more the hammer will not work , anybody ever had to shim a screw or shorten one ?

Yes, I have had to shim up to make a Hogue (wood) grip work. I used a drill to open up the diameter, but not the depth of the grip screw hole. I then stacked a couple of small washers on the screw. You might also try a short grip screw, there are two length grip screws.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
