I recently saw some posts on another Forum about Connecticut being "Gun Unfriendly", which bothered me. There is a rather time consuming process to get a Permit to Carry, anywhere from 4 weeks to ???, depending on the city you live in, and it's pretty much impossible to buy a handgun without one, but
1) With my Permit I can buy a handgin on the spot at any shop in the state, as long as the State licensing unit is open (7 days a week) no waiting period
2) Long guns no waiting period with a Permit
3) Open Carry is becoming much more established
4) No Permit required to have a handgun in the home or business
5) At last count, well over a dozen very well stocked gunshops within a 90 minute radius. In half a day I can visit 6 shops, all with several hundred to over a thousand guns in stock. Blackwater just opened a retail store and range here as well.
6) The two biggest local shops regularly advertise on the radio, and both have begun some TV advertising
7) At least 5 commercial indoor ranges open to the public, two of which do Class III rentals.
I know there are easier places to purchase, but all in all, it could be worse (MA is just half an hour away)
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Steve:
With my son and daughter in law currently doing their medical residencies in CT, I was told the full story about getting licensed to own and purchase handguns there. Yes, it's a little complicated and time consuming, but at least you live in a state that allows concealed carry.
Here, you better have all firearms locked in the trunk of your car or you're going to jail. And even locked in the trunk they better not be loaded.

By 'Here', do you mean Chicago Area (Cook County?) or all of Illinois? I always assumed Cook County but just realized your location is People's Republic of Illinois.

I live in suburban Cook county. However, I believed that the draconian laws regarding the transport of guns in a vehicle apply to the entire PRoI.
I was actually wondering about transporting guns and ammo in a station wagon or SUV. The laws seem to have loosened up a bit. Apparently, as long as the gun is unloaded and in a case and you have a FOID card, you're OK.
Things change. In this case apparently for the better. Also, it seems that now you can carry an unloaded gun and loaded magazines in your purse or fanny pack and still be legal. Who knew?
What's next, CCW in IL??? I doubt it.
