My gun safe is a moderately priced one, can't remember the name and don't want to have to go to the basement to look. It's not nearly large enough. I bought it a long time ago, before so it's pretty cramped. It is in the basement where climate is controlled plus I have some of those things that absorb humidity in it. Over the years this has not been a problem. It has a manual combination lock, I don't like the battery operated ones. Maybe I'm just old fashioned. It was designed for about half the guns I have stuffed in there. 10 long guns, some with scopes really take up a lot of room. It is not bolted to the floor, probably should be. We keep some important paper in it as well as the bank safe deposit box. If I had my time to go over I would buy one twice as big. Gun show is two weeks away so it may get more crowded.

I don't have a Gun Safe, I have a Sentry home/office safe with a fairly good fire and water hazard rating. I do have a rifle that obviously won't fit into it, otherwise it works fine for me, and was well under $300 at Sam's Club. We do store some other items in it as well, computer back up drive, important papers, etc.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Bought a Cannon Safe from Academy Sporting Goods several years ago- I put battery operated LED lights inside - that was my only complaint- lighting. Drilled some holes in the slab and cemented some bolts in. Once it got too crowded, I found http://www.storemoreguns.com/ (wife hated that).
I use the 64 oz DampRid in Louisiana rather than a rod because I felt the rod just heated up the air and didn't actually do anything to remove humidity (my $.02).
Additionally, you can apply an extra fire seal: http://www.odicefireprotectionproducts.com/palusol.html
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

I had ours built into our home-- it is a full size bedroom in the basement, but it has rebar reinforced concrete walls, a solid ceiling, fire resistant drywall, and a fire door. The "double closet" is the true safe, and the rest of the space is the gun room.
And of course it is temp controlled by the house AC/heat.
This is a luxury since we had our house built here in CO. When we move I may not be so lucky.
We already have a full thread here somewhere on the DWF for gun safes.

oh , sorry i did a search but might not have used the right key words .
You're not alone, I couldn't find it either. "Gun safe" brings up 33 pages of threads to look through, I looked at about 15 & didn't see it. I did stumble on the GUN INSURANCE thread though, which is sorta related.

Can't really say any goods or bads on any of them out there, I've
never experienced or personally known anyone who experienced a
safe break'in or a house fire with a safe..thank God.
But I can say that the last Black Friday 2010 I went and hauled the last
Cannon that Tractor Supply had on their sale for my Bro-in-law.
It was the display model and when we got it to his house two shelves
were broken and 2 of the out side handle things were missing.
Now I know and you know that should have been checked before
we left but I just showed up to haul it and that was that. Anyway
long story short , after a dozen calls to Cannon, hours wasted on hold,
two packages being sent, one being lost, here it is 10 months later
and they still owe him a shelf.
Cannon..good safes I hear, Bad customer sevice I know.

COSTCO has been having online safe sales lately. I just picked up a
BIGHORN
19ECB Safe
407 lbs. 30 Minute Fire Protection Safe w/Electronic Lock, 19.1 Cubic Ft.
Free shipping, curbside delivery. Not a bad deal. I just have to get it into the house in my office. They have 850# models I can't even imagine how many friends-beers and dented walls it would take to get something like that in. I don't think someone will just walk off with 400LBs+.

I have a Treadlock, bought in 1991, no electronics. I use a Golden Rod and a desiccant can and have had no problems with rust, even though the safe is in the basement. It has long since become way too small, but I have been thinning out my collection this year and things are getting to the jam-packed level now. I even sold a Dan Wesson.

I bought my Treadloc in 1990 or '91 at a sporting goods closeout (the store was closing... not only did I buy the safe, but about 10 cases of ammo and a bunch of reloading components... ) It's only a 30" model and is waaaaay overcrowded. My project this winter is to gut it and rebuild the shelves so I can get more rifles in, and build a stand-up rack for the pistols... including my new DW.
There is more to a safe than meets the eye... I bought one for my FIL last winter, the dial was very loose and crooked, so I pulled the back off to adjust it, and found some differences between my Treadloc and his Champion:
Treadloc...
...and the Champion...
Granted, it was the 2nd lowest model they offered, and it was a very good price, but after this, I realized you get what you pay for.
If you would like a good education go over to THR and do a search on "recommend a safe". There's a few long threads where dealers chime in. They tell the truth about safes or what most of us have are residential security containers. I will only say if I had known what I know now I would have never bought a Liberty. Not that Liberty safes are bad but better can be had for the money. You will be able to purchase with confidence that you know what you are buying. Hope this helps.
