DWF brothers,

This isn't the most pleasant post, but I'm sure it will apply to most of us who have guns in the house.  For those of you who didn't know, I was in Hawaii on vacation with my family last week, and we had a great time.  The morning of my return to CO, I received a call from my cousin with some bad news (She knew I was on vacation and held the call until my return).

Her 12 year old son had been having trouble in school being picked on by other kids--seems to be a common theme in today's world.  Last Friday he stayed at his step-moms house; upon returning home from school he walked upstairs and retrieved a gun from the nightstand, put it to his head and pulled the trigger...  he was not a "gun knowledgeable" person.  I'm not sure he would even know how to load a gun.  12 years old...

One of my sons is 12, he's very educated on guns, we have our share of guns in the home... I can't get that fact out of my head, it never bothered me until now...  I trust I have educated him well...

Nothing ever seems important until it hits close to home.  I post this not for sympathy or understanding, but as a reminder for all of us about gun safety.  Nothing will change in my home-- I'll still have guns and ammo, my kids will still be well educated on guns... I will however continue/elevate my gun safety training.  I encourage all of you do do the same.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

So sorry for your loss.  When my two son's were young I taught them all I could about gun safety like you.  The boy down the street also good with guns used to visit on occasion.  I know his personality type and couricity.  With that said, I purchased one large gun safe (a real safe) and two Mossberg easy access gun boxes.  Connecticut requires proper storage of firearms and the purchase is sales tax free (wow).  That helped me sleep at night, knowing nothing would happen to me, my family or the kids down the street, or my firearms.

A family in Jewitt City, CT had a gun incident where a child shot himself with his father's firearm which was thrown on the bed when he came home from work.  He was charged with several infractions along with loosing his son.

We all should do our best to protect those we love.

Wisdom is merely the realization of how little one knows, therefore I am wise.

Excerpted from the 2007 State of Connecticut OLR Research Report, summarizing State of Connecticut Gun Laws:

"The law imposes criminal penalties on people who store loaded firearms on their premises if they know or reasonably should know that a minor (person under age 16) is likely to gain access to them without the minor's parent's or guardian's permission"

We have no minor children living in our home. Anytime we expect visitors (minor or otherwise) in our home a quick safety sweep occurs.

I also have felt for many years that basic gun safety education should be required in public school, similar to health, drug abuse, and diversity education.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Parent's today need to step it up and teach their kids some manners, respect

and morals. Obviously something these school "bully's" could have benifited

from !  Anyone who has had childern in the public school system in the last

ten years will agree that between the bring home workload, constant subject

changes, (example: were teaching Califonia math this year...oops  that didn't

work, now we're teaching so and so math this year) and the Federal testing

that is pushed so these schools can get thier funding has these kids working

at an all time stress level. Sadly, no matter how well we instill values and ethics

to our own, it is not enough,  we now must teach them how do deal with those

that have not had a proper upbringing.

Honestly I don't think this is a gun safety or gun education issue (unless the kid was just playing with the gun, which it didn't really sound like it).

Sounds more like this little guy was troubled before the bullying (but I hate to play armchair psychiatrist since I don't really know him and at this point its somewhat moot).

When a 12 year old child wants to die ... thats the result of something more serious than simple training or access to a firearm.
