I'd like to get a reasonably priced scope that I can use with my DW's. I have a B Square mount, and I will be using it on my 715, 722, and 744 in the 25-100 yard range, depending on caliber. I don't expect to do a tremendous amount of scope shooting, I just want a general purpose, do everything scope that will stand up to moderate use up to .44 magnum. Need to keep this at under $200

I'm thinking 2-6x variable, which may be a little bigger and bulkier than I like. I don't want to be over magnified at 25 yards, but my tired old eyes will need all the help they can get at 100 yards. Would a 2x or 4x fixed be better for me?

I'm gonna hit Cabela's later this week to look some over, Simmons and Burris seem to have stuff in my price range.

Any thoughts?

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

One of my all-time favorite pistol scopes is a simmons 2-7 I bought back in '93 for my S&W 617.  It was $230 at the time !!!  It is super clear and deadly accurate.  I have some higher end scopes that are not as nice.  My model 15 sports a Nikon 2.5x refurb I picked up off some internet sight a long time ago.  It holds up to the recoil of heavy loads with no problem.  If you go with a 2-6x scope, be prepared to see how shaky you really areLaugh... my buddies are always amazed when they hold my 617 on 7x.

I actually had a Ruger MK II Target Competition that I "overscoped" with a Nikon variable that I found at a great price. It was just way more scope than needed on a .22lr, and just wasn't much fun. I am likely to do most of my scope shooting in .357 and .44

All my 22 semi's have Tasco ProPoint PDPx's on them (red dot).  For whatever reason they are very accurate for the .22's.  I'm not sure I would mount one on a heavy recoiling revolver, but...

(OK, no wise cracksEmbarassed...) on my super expensive, highly accurized HI-POINT 9MM CARBINE I have one of the Tasco PDP2's and it has held up really well considering the recoil force involved.  Usually semi-auto rifles can trash a scope pretty quickly, but I have a zillion rounds through this one and it still holds zero.

(*** I bought the Hi-point years ago for 99 bucks in a pawn shop because I was tired of seeing it in the rack!  Turns out I got a good one--never jams, hasn't broke, really accurate, and TONS OF FUN!!!)

I have a really nice Burris 2x scope in the cabinet with target turrets I plan on mounting on one of the DW's soon.  I'm working on a different mount--I'm tired of seeing the B-square, even though it works great.

I have a bunch of Encore barrels with different scopes on them & I've come to the conclusion that the Bushy 3200 2-6x is my personal favorite, however that is over your price limit. I'd look at Weaver in your price range. A note on 2x scopes, some people like them and some don't (I don't) so I'd recommend looking through one before buying.

I'm really looking to validate that a 2-6 makes sense for ranges as close as 25 yards (.22 lr) and out to 100 yards (.357/.44). $200 is not an absolute limit, but not much higher, and I will be a relatively infrequent scope shooter.

Steve,

The scope not mentioned above is Leupold.  I have had Simmons before and maybe just my luck, but I had poor performance with them.  I have every other make imaginable on my rifles except Leupold, but on my handguns it is all Leupold.  I have a pair of 2.5-8X variable scopes and several 4X scopes.  The variable are nice when magnified but as mentioned above be prepared to rest the gun or you'll almost never find your target.  The 4X scopes are great at 25 and 50 yds. but I never really used them at 100 yds.  Never tried actually.  My devotion came to Leupold when while hunting many years ago I managed to drop my S&W model 57 onto a hard surface right on the 4X scope from about 3', it made me sick.  The next trip to the range to assess the damage I found it as dead on accurate as though it had never been dropped.  Just my experience, but it sold me.  All of my scopes have come from the evil ebay and were all used, not a problem in the lot.  You can usually if you watch frequently pick up a 4X for around $200.00 or a VariX for about $300 to $350.

The best two scope I like, and use for silhouette, are the Bushnell Elite 3200 2-6x and the Leupold 2.5-8x. Both are repeatable (and we change settings for every distance), but I prefer the Leupold.

Thanks. If I can nail down that a 4x will work for the variety of uses I have, I'd rather not go for a variable because of the smaller/lighter size. Also less complicated, and I can buy better quality for the $$$. I'd go somwhat over budget for a fixed Leupold, I see it as a step up in quality.

I have every other make imaginable on my rifles except Leupold, but on my handguns it is all Leupold.

That's too funny, every one of my centerfire rifles that wears a scope has a Leupold on it - none of my handguns do - exactly opposite!lol2

All this scope talk has me thinking “project time Laugh“…  I've been saving this nice old Burris 2X with target turrets for a rainy day.  I've got some old Bushnell universal mounts/rings somewhere I may try to use.

These are the mounts--old timers like me will remember them.  They are drill/tap.  You screw the taped studs into frame, then rings lock on to studs.  Left side is aluminum, right is steel.

The scope doesn't really care, but you'll get slightly better accuracy with the longer barrel and pick up about another 200 FPS.

My scope went on the back burner once I put a new 715 on layaway, but I'm getting an 8" barrel out of that deal.

I am getting the 2-6 Bushnell when I rebuild the Gun Money stash
