My good friend and his wife recently completed a trip to the NE and he couldn't wait to tell me about his experience getting across into Canada. He drove his personal truck with TX plates up to the border and was immediately asked by the Canadian Border guards if he had a gun in his truck. No "good morning", "how you doing", "welcome to Canada", nothing but "do you have a gun in your truck"? The answer was of course "No". Next question "Are you sure you do not have a gun in the truck"? Answer was "Yes I am positive". Next question was "do you have a Concealed License? He answered "yes". Next question was "Where's your gun?". He told them it was at home. Next question, again "Wheres your gun"? Answer "It's at home". Next statement by the border guard was "I am going to give you one last chance to show me your gun or I will search the truck".
Since I knew he always carried a Kimber pro carry .45 in the truck due to a robbery attempt last year I talked to him about taking his Kimber on the trip a week before he left. His trip included stops in Maryland and NY and NJ for sightseeing and I was concerned that his TX plates would get him in trouble. I have heard Maryland troopers especially stay on the look out for TX plates.
Well the truck search took an hour and my friend says the border guards were a little put off that they did not find a weapon in the truck.....

Went to Canada at the End of June for a Black Bear hunt in New Brunswick, no issues. They asked about guns but we only had bows. Went last year to Niagara Falls with the wife and kids and they asked a lot of questions about guns and no doubt the Canadian officer did not like the idea that in my home state of FreeMan's Pennsylvania, I can and do carry a gun everytime I leave my home. As they say...Gun control is ALL about control and not so much about guns.

It can and does happen when Canadians go south. The US border guards will ask you ten times if you've ever been arrested, finger printed, etc etc. You just answer the same questions over and over, they let you go by. I think they are looking for inconsistency and nervousness.
Anyways, it's just part of the border guards' jobs - can't really complain if they do it well.

"If it’s like any of my dealings with LEO’s they ran his plate knew who he was and already knew he had a CPL."
Not true at all. To my knowledge, this information is not available through those means.
When I was stopped in NC last year for an expired plate, the State Trooper Knew I had my CHP. That was the first thing I said to him and all he said was"I Know, It showed up when I ran your tag and registered owner"
Sure enough, when I saw the screen there it was in RED. "CHP HOLDER"

I stand corrected then, but, still not every state....FLA can not access this info.
I guess I should be clearer. The majority of States limit Public Access to Concealed Permit Holders. Michigan is one of them. But Law enforcement has a System Called here Law Enforcement Information Network,(LEIN).
This database is not public and misuse of the information can lead to a jail term.

I was once harassed at the Canadian border, but it was a LONG time ago, 1970 or so. I was going from home (suburban Detroit) to visit for a couple of weeks in the summer with grandparents at their summer place in Amherstburg, Ontario.
I had clothes, stereo, portable B&W TV, etc. and got stopped going into Canada because I unknowingly looked live a draft evader (19 year old male, with what was probably all my worldly possessions, trying to go to Canada in 1970???)
Showed my Draft Card with a Student Deferment, then all was well.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

How on earth do you ever get into Canada on a hunting trip with a rifle or shotgun? Or the reverse, a Canadian coming to the US for a hunt?
Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

There are forms that you can get online, you declare them at the border, they verify the guns/ammo/legality and then you can come across no problem. You must know the laws as to which guns are allowed and not prohibited going either way. It is actually quite easy if declared and above board.
