So I spent most of the day helping fellow church members clean up after the horrific tornadoes we had here Friday ( yesterday .. I live in Clinton MS and our little town pretty much got hammered). After the work was done a few of us from church took a break to go shooting, and I was invited. It was just three of us at a guys house basically shooting across a pond into the high bank.

John about 60, 5' 9" and 300 lbs

Darrel about 55 6' 3 and 250

Me .. 5' 7"  and 150 soaking wet

Both John and Darrel are big deer hunters and the main thing they were doing was shooting their new 45-70 deer rifles. These get classified as "primitive" weapons and gets them another two weeks in the field hunting.  Darrel also had his "hog gun" a nice blue Blackhawk 44 with about a 5 3/4 inch barrel  and John had:

Stainless Blackhawk with a scope

Glock in .357 sig

S&W ultralite

and finally at the end of all his Encore in .308

The handi rifle in 45-70 is a beast, and seeming pretty dern accurrate. I did not shoot them, but at 100 yards  they were make good shots even with iron sights.

We took turns with the .44s and I think everyone agreed the scope on the 44 sucked. Its was just the wrong scope. We were shooting the pistols at about 75 yards. Mt 15-2 was having a horrible time as the my slow target loads of 158 gr at sub 850FPS were jsut dropping more than I could "kentucky for". Swapping to the 8" barrel and .357 ( 125gr) helped alot, but I still had to adjust a full turn to them up.

One other problem was the sun was to our face, and I did not have a hat. So sighting was a royal pain. I shot the short barreled .44 with one hand blocking the sun and the other doing all the shooting. Gotta love those old school grips. The gun just rolls in the hand. Butter.

Finally john opens up the Encore and shoves it in my hand. Well alrighty then. The scope was MUCH better than the one on his Ruger. But even with that I flinched in all the smoke. Pretty sure I missed the target altogether! The thing was i kinda wondered if thery weren't standing behind me elbowing each other with me and that hand-cannon.

A soon as I finished John handed me another round and I handed the gun to Darrel. Darrel is a real "mans' man" and hunts and fishes as much as he works. (makes a mean venison chilli too). Darrel props the Encore 308 on the table and lines up his shot. I get busy packing up as the wife has already called 3 times....

With my back tuned away Darrel fires and John mutters somthing about "he got too close"

Sure enough... Darrel had put his eye up close to the Encore and was now dribbling blood from the cut above his eye.  Well no one was laughing, but well we all knew this wasn't going to stay a secret long.......

I sure hope Darrel forgives me for telling his 19 year old daughter about 2 hours later to be extra nice to her dad, as he had a headache... and daggum if I didnt have to explain how I knew that... while in the company of about 6 other church members .. in the parking lot at the Mexican restaurant...

Ahhh small town life in the south.... gotta love the little things.

PS: wife is still pissy that I was out shooting (with the boys) while she waited on me to take her out to eat for her birthday... I mean its not like she hasn't had one before.. or 45 some odd ones for that matter.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Great post, too bad you didn't have some "Kentucky" loads with you, the Dan would have shined from that sun in your eyes! It's always a good thing when you get a chance to go shooting with some buds, didn't get those storms up here in Iowa, we got lucky this time.

Nice to hear about all the shooting.  A bud came by to shoot his converted AK and a Sig and Barretta 22cal and 357 yesterday.  I was working on a rototiller in the garage.  Couldn't stop to shoot....screwy

Just last week I was at the range shooting the little 17 HMR.... then I grabbed the 7mm rem mag out of the truck....

Without thinking, I just set it up, got on target and pulled the trigger laugh

Yea the 7mm has more recoil than the little rimfire--I wasn't bleeding, but it smacked me good.

I'm glad the injury wasn't worse. I have yet to be smacked by a scope...knock on wood...but I bet my day is out there.confused

You'll need to work up some proper loads for your 15-2 & plan a day (with the sun at your back), for a re-shoot.range-time
