So my wife had the day off and we decided to head over to the gun club and do a bit of shooting. My wife hasn't shot much but is getting her permit so I suggested a practice session. We took along the Ruger SR22, an LCP, High Standard MK III 357 and my 722 VH8. She shot all of the above but had a few issues. The LCP kicked too much, the HS 357 hurt her hand, and she got slide bite from the SR22. She shot well with all of them. I almost fell over when she said she liked shooting the 722 VH8 the best. She said it didn't kick, (no kidding) was easy to hit what she aimed at, (agian no kidding) and was FUN to shoot! She complained that her arm was getting tired shooting the SR22 but finished off another 100 rounds with the 722 after the SR22! I asked if the weight of the revolver bothered her and she said no, it actually made it easier to shoot.
She hasn't picked a carry gun yet. I was leaning towards giving her the LCP but she actually asked if she could carry a revolver. Again I almost fell over, as I get funny looks from her sometimes when I go to the range with a few wheel guns. I said we'd look for something she would feel comfortable with. I'd love to find a 738 'Lil Dan for her, that would be sweet. She actually liked the feel of the HS, just a bit agressive for a novice. I think I'll put a set of grippers on a 15-2 with a 2.5 BA and we'll run some 38 specials and see how she likes it.
I was happy to hear that she liked shooting the Dan, and now she knows why I like them so much.

Looks like we have a few of the same guns
LCP
SR22
722
15-2 (not an HS, but same gun)
I think the SR22 is a really nice .22, not target quality, but still a lot of fun to shoot
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Last time at the range, a hubby had bought the wife her carry piece (wife hates autoloaders). He bougt her this. I shot it a bit and it was a lot of fun.

Steve I really liked shooting the SR22, easy to handle and accurate, once I got the sights adjusted. Apparently they don't do much with that at the factory, as it was shooting high/left out of the box. I had to crank it in over about 30 rounds. After that, it hit where I pointed it.
My wife was having trouble with the crossed thumbs grip and twice put one behind the slide above the beavertail and OUCH. She learned quickly though.

Cool report Scorpio. The 8" .22LR is a draem to shoot for recoil. I have a DW 738 Lil Dan and to be honest, don't fry me for this. The accuracy is less than stellar! I had Keith modify the sights on mine and I still would not depend on it. I would rather have my Glock, Oh Man am I in trouble now!! If I were to carry a tiny revolver I still like my airweight .32 S&W. A 2" model 15-2 would also be much better than a Lil dan. I think the Lil Dan's are a nice collection piece, but not very real in terms of actual use. Just my opinion, now let the barbequeing begin

Thanks for the honest evaluation Supermagfan, I don't want her carrying anything that isn't reliable and accurate, especially with only 5 rounds to work with. I think she will end up with something like the LCP or LC9, mainly because they are compact and easy to carry. They both have decent accuracy if modest mag capacity. If its too bulky she won't carry it all the time.

I think the LCP is a very good gun, mine runs pretty much any ammo I feed it. I added the LaserLyte red dot, mostly because it is very unobtrusive with a low profile, simply installs on the right side of the frame and adds no bulk.
I don't/won't reload for .380. Hornady Critical Duty has been my choice in the past, I think I'll move to Critical Defense for better performance through heavy clothing. In this caliber I trust a major manufacturer for consistency and performance to be superior to what I can do for myself.
.380 in a small gun takes getting used to and can be a little "snappy". If small and "snappy" is what it takes to always have Peace of Mind nearby, so be it.

I do load 380 but I don't carry reloads, I carry Federal Hydrashocks. I use the reloads for practice. New ammo is more than 9mm around here. I've had friends laugh at my 'pea shooter' when they see it, but most change thier tune when the shoot it.

I agree, no frying needed. The Lil' Dan depends on that "just right" ammo to make it accurate, I'm still trying to find the load that mine wants. Once I stumble on it, I think it will be fine for a defense gun.
BTW Scorpio, I doubt your wife would even notice the recoil on most any gun if she were firing it to defend her life. Noise would probably be the first thing she'd notice, but probably not until after it was over.

Off the topic of His and Her's Range day, I think the LCP (and the P3AT) is a great "minimalist" self defense gun. 6+1 and an extra 6 round mag of .380 in modern, capable .380 loading designed for the personal self defense role, makes a lot of sense. If you can find the KelTec +1 mag extension for your magazines you can be at 15 rounds in your pocket any day, any time, with quicker reload and much less bulk than a revolver.
If my wife carried a gun, it would be an LCP.

I like the LCP, its so light and compact that I've actually forgotten I have it on me a few times. At close range, the 380 is a potent round. The easier it is to carry a particular gun increases the chances it will be carried and available when needed. Any gun you are carrying trumps any gun you left at home in the safe.
