Fellow DW fan's. I have a new DW 44 magnum. I mean new because it is a commemorative piece. Never been cocked until it came into my hands. Please don't ask why I want to shoot it. I have gone over and over this before. I am getting a 6 inch barrel for it soon. But like I said this gun has never even been handled. Its lived in a case since the 80's. So everything about it is stiff. It was dry as a bone. I have oiled it inside and out. It was a miracle that I got the barrel nut off of it with the supplied tool. Thanks to my buddy Headmaster's carpet trick. But now the shroud is on there good and tight. There is the tiniest amount of end play but it will not budge. I don't want to mar the barrel shroud or damage the frame pin. I don't want to use penetrating oils because I don't want to hurt the deep blue finish. So what should I do? And when I get the new barrel it will be fired. Not abused. There were a thousand of these made so its not that rare.

With the barrel nut off you should be able to get some oil down into the shroud. With the gun perfectly vertical, apply oil around where the barrel nut was, and allow the oil to seep down through the shroud. Applying gentle heat to the upper area of the shroud with a blow dryer on low may help. Try wrapping the shroud in a cloth towel and lightly tapping it with a rubber mallet.

Depending on how this gun was stored, there may be some corrosion in there,or possibly any residual oils from manufacturing the barrel or shroud have solidified.

Give the oil some time to work.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Hey Steve CT it came off. It took a little time but it came off. There was no corrosion at all. It turns out that the alignment hole is just slightly smaller than the alignment pin in the frame. Because I put it back on and it was a very tight fit. But it came off again a little easier after I Rem Oiled it.  But its still a tight fit.The barrel threads and all were dry as a bone. Thank you again for your help.big-grin

I'm glad you got that off. It always makes me nervous when I hear of someone that has a problem getting a barrel off.
