Ok, a Firing range discussion sparked some numbers, which led to a pondering of spending on guns, which led to a scramble to pull some receipts . So... if you are willing to divulge your spending this year we'd like to hear some numbers..... Starting on 1 Jan 09...
SHOOT all guns sold............ $8,010
SHOOT all guns bought.........$7,078
At least I sold more than I bought this year.... I can still spend $932 and break even! (except I don't track all the belt buckles, shrouds, barrels, grips, cases, etc)

No specific numbers, but I have bought more than I sold this year, and I hope to add one and sell one by the end of the year.
I did drop $200 on ammo today (1000 rd of 9mm and .45). Hopefully, Santa brings me reloading equipment for Xmas.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Looks like my firing range guess was a little low…$8,929.51
I didn't keep good records of the car stuff I sold, but it is right close to $5,500. No wonder my savings account is a little thin these days. I may try to go after a Seville that's been dangling under my nose, but otherwise, I'm pretty much done until spring. Besides, I need to buy reloading stuff, I'm tired of paying so much for ammo.
So yeah, I'm done.
I hope.
Maybe.
Yep, I can do it.
I think.

Whatever, pal. The year isn't over yet. The difference between yours & mine could be made up in one gun buy. Now go get 'em!
*EDIT* Here ya go, this should do the trick!

I haven't been keeping close tabs on my purchases and sales, but I know that I've definitely made more purchases than sales. How's that for budgeting? It reminds me of Government…always spending more than they bring in. (Most of the sales have been to help finance other firearms that I really wanted.)
While I really do not purchase firearms as investments, I'm with Pike. I believe that good quality firearms are a good place to park your money if it happens to be idle (not safely invested elsewhere). It's also very therapeutic and helps to tame my…

I also agree with you & Pike's reasoning, and that's partly why I've bought as much as I have. These guns are an investment of sorts, and I'm fairly certain that if/when the time comes that I need to liquidate my collection, I will be able to get back out of them a pretty decent percentage of what I've put into them...maybe even a little more, who knows.
I figure that if I end up losing money in the long run, I'm willing to pay that price. Because at least they were something tangible to hold, play with & enjoy for a while, instead of merely watching the numbers rise/fall on a monthly account report. Heck, if I had swiped 10K from my 401K account & put it all in guns two years ago, I would'n feel like I just watched that money evaporate into thin air like it did & would have more to "show" for it today.
You only live once, may as well enjoy it...and I am enjoying DW's!

I wouldn't be thinning out my collection if they hadn't gone up so much in value. I've been collecting for over 20 years, and made some terriffic buys. When you hold onto guns as long as I have, there is a substantial increase in the market price. However with the current market I find myself selling guns that I have only had for a year or two, and still coming out ahead. I've been selling off most of my older and less desireable guns to fund the DW addiction.
It's just like everything else-- buy low -- sell high.

I haven't spend much this year, only about $2000. That is for 2 revolvers, and 2 TC barrels. The word "SELL" is not in my vocabulary, nor is "TRADE", so I have no off-setting income. Still, I have 3 more projects in the works, which should be done very soon, so I need to save for those.

This year has been really down as far as Dan acquisition funds go. I made one purchase early this year (7445) $800 and a few barrels and such. Unfortunately I have had to hold on to all my funds for more pressing (family) matters. Hopefully next year will be a better year all around.

SELL and TRADE were never in my vocabulary either... Then I literally ran out of places to store guns... So we bought a bigger house and filled it up also... Ok, now it is time to sell some stuff... I still have a VERY substantial collection, but I'm going to continue to thin it out a little at a time...

The Photo Gods are truly good to us – my wife and I have been
self employed for 15 years and
all the bills are fine and savings are strong.
Now, fun gun $$ are at a standstill…and to be honest,
there is very little I wish to own, just, more time to shoot.

At the rate gold and other precious metals are raising, I'll climb aboard the "guns as investments" wagon .
Sold $7,585
Bought $11,180
Short $3,595
The above numbers include my wife's purchases, with her mechanical engineer's salary
I didn't include the purchase of rifle optics

Well I use to buy between $1,500 and $3,000 a year on handguns. That did not include the reloading componants, equipment, holsters, scopes, rings....ect. Then 2 years ago that all came to a halt. I think I have bought 2 boxes of bullet a few primers and one pound of powder in that 2 years. I hope in time I can get back to normal
I also don't belive in selling as I usually only buy what I really want.
