I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Why did he 'need' that gun? Surely he didn't need it to hunt, and why buy high cap mags for target shooting?

He bought that AR (and the 1911) for the same reason the rest of us buy them, he saw it, liked it, wanted it, and bought it and you bet he was going to shoot it. He will give it up just because he got caught by the media and wants to save face. If he was trying to illustrate a point by buying it, he would have had his liberal media circus with him at the gun shop.
He should just man up and tell the truth.

I really think the media exposure turns otherwise levelheaded and sensible people into stupid people. Locally (CT) there is a discussion by some of the survivors of the Sandy Hook victims to "turn the money loose". Lots of unhappiness that very little of the millions collected are being given to the families. The grown daughter of one of the adults lost has bitterly complained that the money is not being given to the families quickly enough. In fairness, these families saw the media reap big dollars by sensationalizing this tragedy.

Same with the victims of hurricane Sandy, many of those people aren't getting the money promised them fast enough either.
There's no way Mark Kelly intended to flush $1500 (or whatever) down the drain by buying an AR & simply turning it over to the authorities once he got it, what kind of idiots are we supposed to be taken as? Aren't astronauts supposed to be smart?
