Being a new member thought I would mention how impressed I am with the knowledge, both technical and historical , that I find here.

Also I have a question and didn't know where it should go so I picked the General Discussion section. Hope that's OK.  I was always told that handguns should not be stored in leather holsters because leather absorbs moisture, so I never did. However, while installing peg board inside my gun cabinet to gain space I wondered what the effect would be if I stored guns and leather in the same compartment but not touching. If there is moisture in that area would it migrate to the leather and act as a desiccant for the gun?  Thanks,  W.T.

Welcome W.T.

That's a really good question.  I don't know the answer, but it certainly sounds like it might work, at least until the leather has absorbed as much moisture as it can.  Probably better to buy actual dissicant packets.  The can be dried and reused.  They're cheap from Midway USA.

Being as I live even further south, my opinion, but nothing based on actual knowledge is that short time it can be fine, but long term I would keep a watchful eye on the leather. Even before the leather reaches saturation it "could" become a breeding ground for mold, which will then in turn really start bringing in moisture. I had a $200 pair of leather shoes turn into green slimy lumps in one summer, when I put them in the back of the closet until winter.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

I would say the real issue with storing in leather comes from any dampness that the leather holds being in direct contact with the gun over extended periods of time. Additionally, there may be some pretty caustic chemicals used in the tanning and dyeing of the leather. I can't see how having the leather stored in the same safe with guns would create much of an issue.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
