The two major differences are eye relief and parallax. Most rifle scopes will have an eye relief of about 3 to 4 inches and a parallax set to around 100 yards. Most pistol scopes can have an eye relief from about 9 inches out to 18 inches and parallax will be somewhere around 50 yards. Of coarse there are always exceptions.
