I took my DW 357 to the range Wdnesday.
Thought I had it set up perfectly.
So Iam firing factory 38's and the smoke is unbelevible.
Shot the same ammo in my S&W snub nose. (No smoke or residue)
The DW was covered in powder residue on the cylinder and the frame, even the barrel was coated.
I had the 4 inch barrel gauged at .006"
So what am I doing wrong when I set the barrel distance from the cylinder?

That sounds odd. Not sure but you could try closing the B/C gap to about .003 and see if that helps. Assuming that the snub S&W is a 38 maybe the long jump from brass to forcing cone is adding to the smoke but I do not know. There are a lot of guys here that are smarter than your average bear who will jump in soon. Good luck.

LB's got an idea I didn't think of when reading the ititial post...if the S&W is a .38 & not a .357, the big difference could be that there's simply less distance for the bullet to jump. Otherwise, I'd definitely do as SMF suggested & tighten up the B/C gap...that's one of the coolest features of a DW, that most others can't do.
Give us a report back here...

Interesting...I have a .445 that I have been shooting .44 mag in and have noticed smoke/blast from gap more so than with the supers in it. And is evidenced by soot and such on the bench even. I have tried changing powder to no avail. But I did snug barrel down to a hair off the tightest hole, which proved to reduce this issue and even make better accuracy??
Is it possible gases are getting in front of or alongside a bullet during the longer jump?
I too believe less gap will mitigate the issue of short round, long cylinder.
Of course carbon may build up to a point restricting rotation of cylinder, I clean about every 40 rounds to prevent this.
