Ok found my problem, I took a chance and open my 357 mag. here is what I found, a bent spring. this spring controls the slide that covers the firing pin. it appears it dose not push slide all the way up, why ? because it is draging on fram . .and now it bent some how it came out of the slot it rides in ..

From the pics you have a service revolver ( versus the target model with adj. rear sights) I would think it is Model 14 though I might be incorrect on that. The parts interchange with the target model (15-2), except of course since there is no rear adjustable sight I think you need to stick to the smaller blade front sights. Your barrel/shroud ( aka BA for Barrel assembly is the "plain" style meaning it is not vent ribbed nor full underlug.. The 5" barrel you refer to is called the 6" so a complete name would be Model 14 6. If it had the vent rib you would add a V and so on.
Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box
in that order.

I bet it slipped out of it's slot during the last cleaning-reassembly it had. The previous owner couldn't figure out what he did wrong & sold the gun. User error is common in many mechanical problem areas...with me, it's user error with computers.
Your gun is a Model 14-1...whis is essentially a 14-2 under the skin (non-Porkchop), wearing a Porkchop 4" barrel.
Though I don't own a 14-1 yet, I would bet money that your gun has the same action internals as my 15-1 with 6" barrel pictured below, the cousin to your 14-1 (mine's got a 5¾ barrel if you wanna get technical...) which uses the 15-2 action internals.
I'm sure that a current model 15-2 / 14-2 spring will fix you up nicely & get you blazing away at the range!
