I had thought I had the opportunity to sell my DW 741. Apparently, this individual was shopping around for one and settled on my gun and another being advertised.
He asked me to send him additional pictures and I did. Later, I get this strange e-mail stating that his significant other won't let him have another gun and he will have to sell his "Fordhand and Wadsworth 44 American" to obtain the funds to purchase the 741. What was further asked was "how does it shoot, it looks clean, why are you getting rid of it?" Well, I naturally obliged and told him politely why I did.
Yesterday, I decided to clear out some old e-mail and found that this character had asked me the same set of questions 3 months before. He asked me to provide additional pictures, and finally, have some haggling, offered me to trade his "Merwin and Hulbert 45 Schofield" replica revolver for it (after I had first advertised that NO trades were allowed in my first posting).
[note on the character's guns above: these weren't the actual guns he offered for sale or trade].
Needless to say, I was again put off. The last time I heard from him was a couple of days ago. Finally, I e-mailed him about previous e-mail sent to me back in December and told him politely not to contact me again.
Keeping the 741 "in family" may be done by me just keeping it. Quite frankly, there are uncivilized and rude folks out there who just don't know how to control themselves on drying to deal with syndrome.

Experiences like yours are the exact reason why a few fella's I know
local will never sell another item ...ever. Idiot's like you have been
dealing with have just ruined them.
It is odd that so many bad apples have been attracted to your sale,
I assure you it is not the norm.

Some people are just dumber than a pile of rocks.
I have a sight set for sale for $150 shipped, plainly stated in the ad. Some guy emails me and asks if I would take $125. I politely told him I have $140 in the set, I'm paying for shipping and the lowest I can go is $135.
He sends another email saying "I don't really need it, but will you take $125?" I just told him, yet he still thinks I will deal with him. I just replied to the moron "Learn to read and understand the English language. If you don't need it, why are you bugging me?"
There are quite a few of them out there. If I didn't already have a bunch of 741's, I would have bought it from you.

I had the same experience trying to sell one of my rifles recently. I listed the price, said I was a little flexible on it, and then listed 8 guns I would trade for, stating those were the only ones I wanted. I even specifically said no hunting rifles or shotguns...
Well, of course I get an inbox full of messages trying to trade me hunting rifles and shotguns worth half the price of mine. Then this guy offered to trade me a Smith, and I politely declined, telling him I'm not interested in any Smiths, but if he had a DW or a 454 Casull Ruger I'd trade with him... and he messages me 4 more times offering up different Smiths...
Of course the icing on the cake was the guy who told me my rifle wasn't worth what I was asking, and offered to buy it for a couple hundred dollars less then even my flexible price... so yeah, I think I'm just going to keep mine too.

I'm no expert in this, but if you have clearly described your offer, with what you are willing to sell or trade for, and you get a**holes pushing you for stupid stuff, ignore them! Responding and feeding into their stupidity simply suggests that you will work with them on screwing yourself.
Way off topic (but not really), I get all the responses about the Serial Number Registry, which clearly states that requests for information will not receive a reply. I get far more requests for information than I get responses with information. Those messages asking for information get trashed with no response. Those messages with information invariably get a personal reply.
The openness of the Web invites stupidity. You don't have to participate.

Hello Steve:
I understand what you are saying but sometimes hindsight is 20-20. One doesn't realize the character at the other end is a "poseur/pretender" until a last minute giveaway. O k. I'll admit, I'm a likely victim of that old proverb "you fool me once shame on you, you fool me twice, shame on me." However, I can forgive myself for such mistakes, especially if the dolt at the other end tries these things between a three month span. With so much tire kicking, one doesn't have time to keep track of the handles of the prospective buyers.
Speaking of which. Remember that guy whom I tried to sell the 741 to the last time? I won't be hearing from this dude again. I thought I'd share what had transpired from our so-called buyer to the you who might have had issues with their own sales. This might provide some closure as to why we shouldn't deal with these beings in the first place. The mindset of these "tire kickers" is quite interesting
After I discovered that I had been "hoodwinked" before by this same being three months before (when he slipped in that unwanted offer of swapping his Forehand and Wadworth pistol), I told him to please do not contact me ever again with his absurd sales questions. He was upset at me, stating that "he was considering one of two 741s" and that to make a sale, one has to "put up with a lot of tire kicking" before a sale is made. He further stated that "it IS his business to ask questions" since the sale isn't in a gun store and you "will never know who will stop asking questions" to sell the gun (note, this is in response to my email to him stating that my motivation for selling the 741 is none of his business. If he wants the sale, he can take it as it is. He even admitted that the additional pictures showed that the 741 that I was selling appeared to be fired very little!). Normally, a more rational person might have stopped with the questioning and likely would have purchased the pistol in that condition.
He also went on further to say that his previous questions to me stated that the price that was selling the gun was "too much" and therefore, had to reengage me with more inane (and repeated questions) when I went down in price. The amazing thing that even at that point, he said he couldn't do a deal because his significant other demanded he give up something in his present collection to make room for the new item. His other questions were "are you like me, with too many guns and have to sell one?" I guess in order to sell the 741, I have to show some sort of empathy to his plight by nodding my head "yes."
He finally stated that I was the problem and that I gave the forum "a bad name" and it going to be a fact that there will be "tire kickers" to deal with and lots and lots and lots of questions to answer before a deal is made. And that I can bet my bottom dollar that if I had the last glass of water on earth, he wouldn't buy it from me (hallelujiah!)
I'll conclude by saying that this is the type of buyer we have had to deal with. In the last two months, I had a large ticket item and four guns for sale. In each case save the last, there was a minor amount of banter and exchange before a deal was reached. It took no more than a day or so to conclude the deal and that was it.
However, there are reality challenged and selfish individuals out there who do not know nor care that the majority of us have jobs and lives outside of our hobbies. As a matter of good will, we all have to look in the most favorable light to every prospective buyer of our stuff, and sometimes, go out of our way to accommodate their need for information. But there comes a point when one knows the other is simply not interested in playing by your rules and you have to be firm and cut them off before wasting any more of your precious time.
Thanks for the rant. I feel better now!

I am selling some old motorcycle stuff on ebay, and received this question yesterday evening:
"Please let me know if these kits are the right and left rectangular regulate the shape of the BMW original box that has the same amplitude smaller straight up and down, previous to exosto reason."

Wayne, the only correct answer to that question is:
"Sure, send payment ASAP before someone else snaps up the "right and left rectangular regulate the shape of the BMW original box that has the same amplitude smaller straight up and down, previous to exosto reason" before you do, there's only one of these in existence!
