My experiences with 22 ammo and a finicky pocket pistol and what I'm learning

One of the reasons I like revolvers is because they eat pretty much anything. The Dans are even more open to all kinds of loads with the ability to switch barrels.

It started with a small Taurus pt22 my wife has. I was ready to sell, trade or give it away.

I haven't pulled the trigger (buy) on a semi-auto pistol yet because of the fact that they are particular about what shoots well in them. Many times I been out shooting with folks who spoke to soon about how their pistols won't fail. Then it happens and I just keep firing away with the revolver. Haven't bloodied or pinched myself either.

Now back to the 22. I finally have come across a 22 that so far has worked in the pt22 all the time. If I switch to a different brand this gun will let me know in some manner that the round is sub par. I have dealt with every type of failure possible in this pt22.

What works is CCI 22lr LRN 40gr Standard Velocity 1070fps. The gun runs on this like a champ.

So I tried a similar style in Winchester SuperX 22lr 40gr  1065fps truncated cone hp. It was one failure after another. Duds, fail to ejects, stove pipe, hell a few didn't even leave the chamber to rack the slide.

Now what brought all this together for me was a video on you tube. It's Jeff Quinn doing one on the Ruger Charger. At 7 minutes into the video he is using a suppressor with some Golden Bullets. Watch it and I think you'll catch on to what got me thinking about all the above. The ammo is not consistent.

Then I was shooting the Dan 22lr today with Winchester M22 and then some CCI AR tactical guess which one was so much easier to eject? Damn even the brass used must be different...

There is so much to semi autos to take into account. Their mechanical actions used and the forces applied by the ammo must match.

I now notice the small things, like did you know that the pt22 has such a strong main spring that you can't really rack the slide. That's why is has a pop up barrel. But if you do rack the slide it acts like a compound archery bow. Really hard at first then real easy to hold once it's back. Think of all the physics in that action...

Back to that little pt22 it's small, it's fast and my wife can put all nine in a paper plate fast at 10 yds, mag after mag but only with the CCI LRN 40gr 1070fps.

By the way I sure am tempted to get one of these Ruger Chargers, there is a dealer here selling them for $235. Man you could go through 1000 rounds in no time. The suppressor costs more than the pistol and more paper work.

Endeavor to persevere,
Press on regardless.

My experience exactly with .22lr!

Over the years I have owned 3 .22 revolvers (2 DW's) and bunch of auto's.

All were"accuracy sensitive" and definitely had preferred brands for consistent accuracy. There was less sensitivity in function, there seemed to be some brands that each gun really did not like, but it was never an across the board problem with any one brand. Most of the time I have 6-8 different brands/loads on hand, I have had up to 20 on hand at times.

If I discovered one that was especially good in a particular gun, I would stock up.

One always good one for me has always been Federal AutoMatch, I buy it whenever I find it.

BTW-I'm down to just two .22's now, a modified Buckmark and a Ruger SR 22. Once I sharpen up the old memory, I'll come back and and post of a list of the ones that have gone by the wayside.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

If you own a .22 semi auto...you own an assortment of fodder to feed it... I usually start with a 40gr lead, standard velocity, cartridge and work from there.

My limited experience with .22s handguns agrees with you, Maxwell. At present I only have two, a Browning Buckmark and an older S&W model 17. The Browning is in my opinion a great pistol, however it is particular about ammo. With ammo it likes it runs 100% and shoots nice groups. On the other hand the old S&W model 17 K-frame will  give a respectable group with pretty much anything you put thru it.

The worst .22 I ever had, actually the worst firearm I ever had was a Jennings .22 pocket automatic. No matter how much I worked with it or what ammo I could hardly get it to run through a whole magazine with out an issue of some type. One of the most frustrating pieces of equipment I ever owned. I finally traded it towards another firearm, I am not sure they even gave me anything for it in the trade I kind of made them take it just to be rid of the gaddarned thing.

CCI 22 SV is what I use in both auto pistols I own. It's what S&W recommends for the Model 41. The Ruger MKIII will shoot anything it seems but I use the SV in it with a suppressor. It's been said using the higher velocity 22 in older High Standards could cause cracking in the metal of the pistols.

Never thought about until reading this thread……the difference in velocity across what's available in 22lr is striking. 20% and higher depending on the ammo. In other calibers that would be called +P or ++P with the resulting warnings etc. Odd that…..

I have a Magnum Research, Magnum Lite .22LR rifle that my wife gave to me as a gift some years ago.  I came across the same issues.  What it came down to is this great little rifle has a preference for the cheap Remington (550 round) bulk pack stuff.  If I do my part, the rifle will run a consistent 1" group at 100 yards with this ammo.  We also have a second one but chambered in .22 WMR and still have not found ammo this rifle likes.
