A few months ago I picked up an 8" m15. I have shot it some and thought it was a pretty good shooter. Today I thought I'd found out how good. No one else was out at the range today so I went out 50 yards on the steel plates and dropped the first one on the first shot. Dropped the second and on and on. These are 8" plates and I was firing single action but darn that was a good feeling. So I went to 60 yds and still dropped them. I was using 158 gr lswc over 4 grs hp-38. Where the hell has this gun been all my life. I got it at the LGS and 35% of the bluing is gone. but what the heck its a keeper.

That just means that it's had plenty of experience doing what it was born to do...putting those bullets where they belong.

That's the very same thing I asked myself the first time I ran some rounds through my (new to me) DW .375 SuperMag last year! This gun has the sweetest trigger of all my DW's & every time I pull it, it's almost as though the gun says to me "watch this one"...
Meanwhile I'm just... ... followed closely by ... hehe

Luvs my 15-2!!!
I hear you about the range... Every time I go to the public range its semi-autos at 5 yards... that is sooooooo boring. I got so excited when they moved back to 10 yards!!!
(then they went back to 5 yards cause they kept missing)
I do have to say, my 148gr over 3.8 gr of Titegroup had a heck of a drop by 75 yards.... so much i gave up and went the .357 store bought rounds (125 gr).. that was the ticket.

While I'm not a 5-yard freak, I have to ask a question. You guys shooting out to 75 yards and such, do you have scopes?!!! I'm no spring chicken but... I have a hard time SEEING the target if it gets over 20 yards. At 75, would you even see the paper in front of the sight?
I started to get a complex when I read one fellow's post about his 2 1/2inch DW being a tack driver at 50 yards!
Am I THAT BAD? (I know, I opened that can...)

Most of time I use 25 yrds for testing from a gun rest. Defense practice
is 7 yrds and before hunting season unscoped guns get drilled at 75 yrds
on an eight inch target untill 5 out of 6 hit home. Scoped guns get practiced
at 100 yrds with same 5 out of 6 drill on eight inch target.
All is subject to the day your having though, some days your in the
zone and others your not steady enough to carry a cup of coffee across
the room ! I've had to pull down a few times on game because I just could
not comfortly keep the sights or cross hairs steady.
I have shot bow for many years, competition and hunting, Frequently
practice 60 yrd targets but would never shoot game at that distance.
Shooting longer distances, even if your groups are sub par, will improve
your normal ranges considerably.
Put up an eight inch piece of swinging steel walk way back until you start to
chuckle and cut loose. You'll be surpised how far and how many.

Thanks for the advice Blacktop. I've gotten hungup on 7 and 15 yards trying to make one ragged hole before I move it out farther. I'll move it out to 25 yards next time and then move it in. Hopefully my 740 will be functional by next weekend and then I'll go to the outdoor range and try 50.

I don't normally shoot at 75 yards... I was invited to a friends house and they were testing thier new Handirifles at 75 yards ( 45-70) . I dont even own a hunting rifle so... I used my Dan!
Normally I shoot 15 - 30 yards, or what ever ICORE and Steel Challenge is at. When I go to the public range... its what ever everyone is shooting, but 5 - 7 yards is pretty dern boring. I don't have any scopes.
One "trick" ( I don't think i invented it or anything) is to use the stickers that are normally used to cover holes to mark the spot you want to hit. Orange and yellow works real well. I was able to center a yellow "dot" at about 10 yards on attempt #1. Now that is fun! ( single action 6" VH)
One of my BIG problems with the ICORE I did was that the cardboard target did not have printed lines... instead it had these perforated lines... There is no way to see them!!!! I don't know what the real shooters were doing, me I just sucked.
As for that 75 yard shooting... The .44 really shined over my .38s. Just too much drop on the smaller round while the big boy lost very little elevation. If I were to do much shooting like that I would move up.

C5, I hear you!
Autoloaders:
.380-up close and personal, if I can't hide and evade, you're close enough for my "lil friend" (6+1, and if it takes more than that, well, I've lived a good, full life)
9mm-8-10 yards almost exclusively. This is my HD gun, and up to 10 yards is what I need it for, backed up by an AR with plenty of 30 rd mags (these are the "ready guns", and this is not the house you want to invade)
.45- love to shoot it anywhere out to 25 yards, and I'll play around out to 50 yards
Revolvers:
.357-in 4" is SO MUCH FUN to shoot up to about 50 feet it should be illegal. I also like to shoot in 6"/8" out to 50 yards, just for fun. In my (much) younger days I used to shoot .357 out to 100 yards inside of 12" once I got sighted in, I loved blowing up the berm to get sighted in.
.44 Mag- I have one, and I'm not much of a fan. Inside 25 yards, 9mm works, .357 is fully capable, beyond 25 yards, it's rifle time for me.
I admire the guys who can make a pistol work at over 50 yards, I can't, in much the same way that I can't make a Dodge Intrepid turn a 15 second quarter mile. It will never do it, but that doesn't stop me from thinking that it just might "this time"
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

200 METERS!??
That's like almost 220 YARDS! I get in my car if I need to go more than 200 yards! You could hide a Wal-Mart behind the sights at 200 meters!
Now, don't tell me you do it with a model 14 to boot!
You must practice close up by shooting ants and you've got really good eyes!

You should check out this excellent article that IHMSA80x80 wrote a while back, on shooting handguns at 200 meters. LINK
