I've known for a while that my laptop was getting ready die on me , so on Black Friday my wife got me an early Christmas gift
Nothing fancy, basic HP laptop that is only about 10000% more capable than my old one
BUT with WINDOWS 8
I do all the basic start up stuff, registering warranty, setting up email (I have 4 personal email addresses?), accepting all the default set up stuff
"I'll start transferring bookmarks, web sites, pictures, files tomorrow
"Are you ever going to start using that new computer?"
January 1, 2013- "Huh, why does the display on (Old Faithful?) keep flickering? I'll Restart
So I restart and get a display that looks like a combination of bleeding Madras and wide wale corduroy (I'm still stuck in the 60's), with an overlay of lightning bolts
So now I am manually rebuilding my online life from memory (yeah, the Alzheimer's Kid Rides Again) which kind of goes like "What the heck would I have used as a password when I joined .... three years ago?
So now I can tear the old laptop apart to get the hard drive, borrow a hard drive dock, and start getting some old files back
BUT I managed to use 10 different Smileys coherently in one post
uh, 11 now
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Good Luck Steve,It's a job migrating from one working computer to another so I don't envy the task at hand for you!

And you are a Computer Guy. Admittedly, I have a lot less to migrate, but almost no competence with which to do it. I'm reduced to calling my kids and begging for help!
This Windows 8 touch pad stuff is making me crazy!

The whole "new computer thing" is a double-edged sword, IMO. It's nice having it be twice as fast as your old one & some new features are cool, but yeah, transferring files, pics, bookmarks and the like is a pain.
I must be sick too, because like Ron, I read your smileys as fluently as the words.

When I upgraded computers a while back it took me an hour or so. I told the new one to pull all my files from the back up HD and watched while the new one got all my stuff and told me it was done. Man I like Time Machine. Learned my lesson when I had one die about four years ago and didn't have a back up. I've got about $50 or so in the back up HD.
I've grown to hate Windows.

I didn't really want to transfer everything because my old laptop was so crapped up with unused software, registry errors, JUNK!!!
If I can get it to start up again I have some files, pictures, and music I want, then it's HAMMER TIME

Uh, Yeah OK, NO!
I do recall my son and I beating the crap out of a laptop that went "toes up" on him while overseas, and it was so much fun you can't believe it.

Had a CRT TV that took twenty minute to warm up and if some walked by it wrong
the blues and green took over the screen untill you smacked it around, we (I) put up
with that for about eight months (yea I'm that cheap) then one day me and the boy ended
it suffering with a 20 ga. and the DW 44. Fun, fun, fun.
