So for a guy who's been around DW's most of his adult life I thought I was pretty observant... I've owned just about every BA ever made and a few that supposedly "never existed" .....
so -- if a 10VH is supposed to be 10" from the face of the cylinder to end of barrel, one could reasonably assume that if you stuck an 8" and a 2" shroud end to end you should get the same measurement.........
WRONG !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It comes out shorter than 10".....
Don't even ask me what happens if you try it with a 6" and 4" (even more off, go ahead and go look...)
Any of you fellow experts care to enlighten me...

Well, since about 1/2" of any barrel screws into the frame, the shroud will be about 1/2" shorter?
At least that's what it looks like on the 4VH that I just measured
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Pretty sure thats right Steve. Almost certain w/o getting her out, my 10VH shroud is 9 1/2 to 95/8

I struggled a little with the 2+8 versus the 6+4 difference, then I recalled that what we refer to as 2" is actually a 2-1/2" barrel, with a 2" shroud

If you measure just the barrels, you should come up correct except on the large frame guns the 10 inch is only 9-3/4, and of course, as Steve said, the 2 inchers are all 2-1/2.-Mike
Exactly.
The only caveat to this is on the 14 & 15 Porkchops with the flush barrel nut. The 4" and 6" on the 11 & 12's were an even length, but when they moved the exposed nut flush on the 14/15 and 14-1/15-1 Porkchop models, the overall shroud length remained the same, but the barrels are 1/4" shorter...in other words, the same as the nut thickness. So on those guns, the barrels actually measure 2-1/4, 3-3/4, and 5-3/4.

believe me, I know the math for chop/non chop/exposed, etc... but shroud lengths are weird--pull a few out yourself and prepare to be boggled...
We're just talking shrouds. not barrels--face of cylinder to tip of shroud.
I just had SMF measure a 10VH--it was exactly 10"....However, a 10V is 1/8" shorter... go figure
