I am new to this forum. I had been looking for a revolver for a while, thinking about Colt, Smith, Ruger. Then I kept reading blogs about DW being very good. The rest is history. I purchased an older 15-2, from the serial number sheet here I figure it was probably made in 77. I took it out to the range yesterday for the first time. I am used to an auto so this will take some time to get used to.
I have a question regarding the side plate. There is a half circle shape piece missing from my side plate. Is this something that normally falls out? can a replacement be bought?

Welcome to the forum, you made the right choice for a revolver. I think the piece you are missing from the sideplate is probably the cylinder stop. I have seen other guys who had them fall out. I believe you can get one from the Dan Wesson factory, unfortunately they had a fire last fall and are closed. Info I have says they will reopen for parts in the spring. Until then maybe someone here will have one, or check Gunbroker or Ebay, old parts often show up there. Somewhere around here there is a thread of a member who actually made his own replacement.

That is the cylinder stop, it "stops" the cylinder from sliding back too far when ejecting brass. It is not actually a separate part, on DW's of your vintage (I know, I have one too) that part of the sideplate was poorly engineered and that piece breaks cleanly from the sideplate and gets lost. Later years have more substantial reinforcement of this.
Good News/Bad News- Dan Wesson in Norwich, NY (the Factory) has a service part to replace that little "nub", unfortunately they had a fire a short while ago and are not in a position to supply one to you just now. Check the "Where can I order parts" FAQ on the right sidebar for info on contacting them.
And, WELCOME!

I saw that today but it is missing the same nub. I guess other than the gun not being complete, that is an area that dirt/dust can get into the action.
Good catch. On earlier guns this part of the sideplate had a very sharply defined profile as part of the sideplate. On later production this "nub" was smoothed into and better supported as part of the sideplate. DW Norwich will eventually be back up to speed, and this is a standard service part for them.

I was wondering if you could make that stop out of a small Woodruff key? It could be blued with some bottle bluing and should match fairly well. I would also be curious if it could be epoxied into place to prevent future drop outs?
