So my local gun shop had an advertisement for “ Dan Wesson 44 mag revolver 600 bucks, consignment.”I went up and put my $300 down I will have it in a couple days. Obvious question is what do I need to do first -have it professionally cleaned and checked out, run thew numbers. any suggestions would be wonderful,. It’s blued, not ss45D40B0F-9661-4202-A418-C0B5805A9CFE.jpegImage Enlarger

A polish call Flitz is what I use. Rub it in well with your fingers and wipe off with a soft dry rag. First oil and scrub the chambers and bore with a  brass 44 Cal brush and swab out with a cotton swath. If there is lead in the barrel you may need a lead solvent but do not get it on the Blued parts. A barrel tool is absolutely necessary to remove the barrel and shroud for good cleaning but mainly to correctly set the barrel cylinder gap. I would oil the inside through any openings around hammer, trigger, etc. I would not waste my time and money with a gunsmith. We can help you with any problems. Read the forum, especially the Gunsmithing section. If you have serious problems which I doubt I would send it back to Dan Wesson instead of trusting a gunsmith who may ruin it.

Your grip is interesting. If the medallion is pewter it is a Rosewood grip that came on the first 500 guns made. Your gun is not one of those. It may be darkened zebra or walnut though if it not a pewter medallion.

Nice looking 44. It certainly sounds like you found a real bargain.

Check out this forum post to evaluate the functionality of your new revolver:

https://www.danwessonforum.com/forum/revolvers/revolver-checkout-how-to-tell-if-a-particular-specimen-is-any-good/

In all likelihood your revolver is in fine condition. If it checks out according to the above forum post, then you can shoot it with confidence.

You should definitely get the barrel tool and a gap gauge to set the cylinder/barrel gap before firing.

Enjoy!

So here are the # on my 44 mag.44B002545. If any one could help tell me what the numbers stand for,  that would be great.

The 44 designates caliber; B designates finish (blue); the other numbers usually designate sequence in which it was produced, but they can mean something else on custom guns.

Note that 44s began production at the Palmer plant even though they were rollmarked Monson for a period of time. No large frames were manufactured at Monson. The first 44s had a shorter stubbier hammer spur than yours.

Looks like a very nice 44 for a good price. As far as a wax/polish I like Renaissance Wax which is a non abrasive wax /polish safe for wood, gun finishes and a great number of things. It's even used in a some museums to protect paintings. Just a dab on your fingertip to apply and buff. A little goes a long way and it's easy to find on line.IMG_1387.JPGImage Enlarger

Thanks for all the good information. Here in California, I can finally pick up the gun on 11-28. Of course there is almost no ammo in California! I have managed to find 4 boxes of 44 special!  Now the hunt starts for companion 44 mag rifle. I am thinking of a Ruger 96 / 44. Any recommendations?

Winchester 94 in 44 Maggie!  I really enjoy shooting the rifle I own.

Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....
