Hi All. I'm new to this forum. I have a dan Wesson 357 pork chop I believe. there is no model number on the outside by the trigger guard. so I opened up the cylinder and in the bridge it is stamped Model 11-s and has a 5 digit serial number. cant find anything on this at all. how old is it. wondering if it is a prototype maybe and wasn't for sale? all the pics I find show the model number on the outside? really baffling me. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Early model 11 and 12s had the serial number on the crane. The very earliest had the model number on the grip tang. Under the grips.
The first Dan Wessons, models 8,9,11, and 12 were debuted in early 1970. There were approximately 10,000 before they became models 14 and 15. 8 and 9 are 38 Special. The rest are 38 and 357 Magnum. In 1971 the 12 sided nut on the muzzle went inside the barrel and the barrel tube was shortened 1/4". You will need a barrel tool if you have a transition gun, a model 11 with an interior barrel nut. If you still have a an exterior nut you can use the appropriate socket or crescent wrench.
There was another change that was made. The hand and hand spring were redesigned because the early hand spring was wrapped around the hand and it rubbed against the sideplate, leading to failure. The newer hand spring had the end inserted into a slot on the back of the hand. You may want to check that. If you have a 5 digit serial number you may have the newer hand and spring already. BTW, the only difference between models 11 and 12 are fixed versus adjustable sights. Also, the cylinder assembly slides off when you remove the barrel shroud.
eBay often has porkchop barrel assemblies under Dan Wesson. There were 3 versions of the porkchops. 11 and 12,14 and 15, and the unofficial 14-1 and 15-1. The first two are basically the same as far as front sight height but the 14 and 15 barrels are 1/4" shorter as the nut is inside the shroud. That would work for you. The unofficial -1s have lower front sights and rear sights and they are not readily interchangable. Also, Model 11 and model 12 have different front and rear sights. The model 12 front sight would make you shoot low, but you could file the front sight down and make it work if you had to. Better though to get the right one. If you have a Model 12 and use an 11 shroud, you will shoot high with no way to adjust it.
I hope I didn't confuse you.
