I started digging through some patent information tonight and came across this one:
Interchangeable barrel system for revolvers
The assignee of this patent is the United States Firearms Manufacturing Company. What stood out to me was the following statement:
The issue of barrel interchangeability was addressed in revolvers but led to a design that was so cumbersome [Dan Wesson design] that is no longer used. This design involved an entire barrel covering or shroud housing and neither the method nor the finished product was successful.
To me the Karl Lewis design is not cumbersome and the result of the barrel being under tension produced a very accurate revolver...
If I had to describe barrel interchangeability with one word it would be "superior" not "cumbersome" lol.
You all probably already know this, but here is a site with lots of info on Karl Lewis, including some communications with DW and pictures of his first prototype:

This method is exactly the one used on several of the S&W Performance Center revolvers, although they do not allow individuals to interchange barrels. Their focus is on the tensioned barrel design.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I had forgotten about that site, thanks for posting the link. I notice that whole collection is for sale. Man, would that ever be an incredible thing to be able to be caretaker of for a while.
Nice patent list, Sparky. There are some really interesting ones in there. The "gun leveling device" seems very similar to the ported barrel that made into production on .44's.
