Well, I have never seen a gray case, but I think the black cases are older than the brown because I bought my first two cases in 1985 and they were brown.
If I'm wrong, someone will correct me. I'm really just guessing based on my own experience.
Yes, I have washed the fabric from the interior of several of my cases fairly successfully, using a very mild detergent like Ivory Snow in cold water. JoAnn Fabrics carries a similar fabric on what seems to be a seasonal basis. I have used this to replace torn liners as well.

I haven't seen a gray case either, not to say that it's not possible. All the case types I've seen thus far are toward the bottom of THIS LINK, listed in what I believe to be chronological order.

I'll agree--black first, no gray, then brown cases in a variety of shades. You can get the fabric fairly clean washing it (especially if you are married with kids) wife treats the oil stains with something, they come out sometimes.
depending on the condition of the gun / barrels depends on how clean a fabric I put in it. The shooter grade Pacs have oil stains to match the gun... The pristine safe queen types get the cleanest fabric.
