Man, sounds like the guy had no choice if he wanted to live.
The woman, on the other hand, well, I wasn't there and news articles are notoriously short on accurate details. From what I read it doesn't sound like he posed a threat to her. I would have called 911 and been a good witness but I'd be hesitant to pull a gun on a trespasser who wasn't threatening my family or me.
The good part of both stories is bad guys aren't getting away and good people are still alive.

All things considered, I'm not grabbing a gun and going out to the back yard at 3 AM after a guy trying to get out of my yard. You come in (or attempt to come in) my house, let the chips fall where they may. If I shoot someone trying to get OUT of my yard, I think I have a big problem!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.
