And I'm not a Rifle Guy, I own one rifle, a 16" heavy barrel AR in .223.
Not shot a lot, and I want to shoot it more. I expect most of my shooting to be on a range out to 100 yards, from the bench and on a bipod. Once I shoot off almost 1000 rounds of factory ammo (also known as converting ammunition into brass), I'll be reloading. The question is: Scope???
Based on a lot of advice from my shooting tutor, I'm planning to go with a 3-9x40 scope on a good "return to zero" mount. I saw and looked through a Nikon P-223 scope, seemed very nice. My "tutor" is strongly suggesting that a Vector Viper is a better choice. American Made, Veteran Owned and Operated, employing American Heroes, and they look to be great qualty.
Anyone have any experience?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

For that rifle at that distance your choice of a 3-9x40 should suit you just fine. It will also allow you to stretch from that 100yd mark if you get the chance. I'd say go with the made, although I have a couple of low end Nikons and they are pretty good. One thing you might consider, I know it helps with my aging peepers, is an illuminated reticle. Speaking of which, what kind of reticle are you looking at? I prefer a mil dot.
Get good with that bad boy and Ron and I can take you pig hunting!

if you find one...what's your plan?

I have no personal experience with Vortex but a couple friends have them and like them. I'm pretty sure they're actually made in the Philippines or Japan depending on which model you buy. I do have lots of experience with Nikon and they have become my default scope of choice. If you can find one the Zeiss Conquest is assembled in America and they're being discontinued so they're marked down. They're very nice. I bought one for $350 from my local Gander Mountain. Of course there is always Leupold and Redfield that are American made.

I'm shooting EOTech on my 450 Bushmaster. The 300BO, 6.8, and 5.56 are all iron still. It's what I got used to before we started using optics. I'm partial to EOTech, after shooting with the President's 100 for a summer in Badhdad, and of course Trijicon. That being said, most of my hunting rifles wear Leupold and Nikon. My hunting pistols wear Bushnell mostly. So you can see- I'm all over the place.
The standard train of thought is that your optics (if you rely on them) should be as good as the gun; if you have an $800 gun, then you should have no quams about an $800 scope. Needless to say, I haven't bought into that.
If you plan to remain 100 yds or less, I'd go with a red dot such as Aimpoint or EOTech and skip the magnification. Sorry that was a bit long... I didn't even go into first or second focal plane reticles.
Technically, the glass is always full; half liquid, half air....

Thanks for the replies, to clarify slightly, I specified 100 yard because that is the furthest I will be able to shoot locally, and easily. With 3-9x (and my aging eyes really need the magnification) I am pretty sure that I can easily go out to 200-300 yards. The reticle is a BDC Deadhold.
I have a very inexpensive illuminated reticle scope, it's OK, but I'd like to upgrade to better quality optics. Probably going to be my only rifle, and I'd like to match up better optics.
The Nikon was very clear and visible, and I'll go with that as the minimum and be fine with it. Rumor has it that I will have access to a very substantial discount with Vortex, and I'm pretty interested in supporting a US Veterans company if I can.
I have been told that they have exceptional customer service and go way above and beyond regarding warranty, and I quote:
"If you ever have a problem, no matter the cause, we promise to take care of you."
The only disclaimer refers to deliberate damage, accidental damage will be resolved, if not by repair, then it gets replaced.
