SCAM? or Common Practice?

Why do some direct sellers insist on only Money Order payments?

Tried to buy two parts from private individuals, met in Forums, in the last 2 months.    No website sales listing.    Both sellers asked for Money Orders mailed to them.

I asked for another form of payment option to insure buyer protection such as PayPal, ebay, or GB account.

I just cannot wrap my head around sending $$$$ in Money Orders to a stranger, and "hope" that the item is shipped to me.  Especially, when there are so many options with protections for the buyer and seller.

NO INTENTION of insult to the sellers.   I understand they want security on their end.

But, it would be nice  to have some on my end.    (I offered, and am considering flying across the country to make the purchase in CASH.)

One good thing about eBay is that it shows my record of sales, buys, and positive feedback. So if I ask for a USPAMO, people know I'm for real, and will come through. My last sale on eBay using PayPal was held up for 21 days due to their new procedures making sure all went well...when I have a 10+ year record with them and  100% + feedback, this was total BS.

What I'm saying is if the online site shows a seller's track record, it is much better to see who you are dealing with. Good luck.

Cheers

After many years of Gunbroker and forum sales and purchases I have found many of the transactions work fine with Postal Money Orders. The problem with cashier and certified bank checks is they can be easily faked. Paypal is anti gun and will close your account if the transaction is firearm related. I always check Gunbroker and eBay ratings when dealing with forums I look for posts and comments.

I have had great success here with fellow forum members.
Due diligence is important for both parties.

I totally agree with Photohause and Dan Fan. I haven't sold yet but I have over 200 Gunbroker transactions and maybe twice that on eBay. I have not had an USPS money order problem. I do not bid on NR sellers. I have had a couple unsatisfactory purchases. One was an outright fraud and I paid with a personal check. I did end up getting a refund. My very slick FFL buddy tracked down his assets and let the seller know he had a lot to lose. Buying from a forum member can be risky though. Lol.

I also have to agree with photohause, Dan Fan and Ole Dog.  I've sent and received USPS Money Orders many times without problem but have had issues with online payment scams.  I'll use PayPal or Zelle if the individual I'm dealing with is on a forum and has good feedback there, otherwise it's MO only if I'm selling.

USPS or United States Postal Service money orders can be easily tracked and the post master general can and will investigate fraudulent dealings, the MO can be tracked right to the bank and or check cashing center it was cashed or deposited at.

I for one am old and do not fiddle with the new fangled payment systems.....old and set in my ways I guess.

I've done about a dozen USPSMO transactions as both a buyer and seller. If someone has a decent amount of feedback, I seriously doubt they would want to deal with Postal Inspectors because they scammed someone.

I have done upwards of 50+ transactions with MO's. I feel a lot safer with a MO than putting my account/tracking number out there on a check. Usually a MO means the recipient has some sort of account to cash/deposit them which would help to trace them in a bad transaction. Plus the postal inspector in addition to the regular law enforcement.
