I am far from an expert on this, but the most knowledgeable, well rounded and expert shooter I know (my son), is very impressed with the quality for the $$ with Vortex. Their reputation for customer service and standing behind the quality or their products seems to be great, and they have a pretty good range of price/quality options.
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I totally agree with Steve on the Vortex. I have 3 of them on rifles and am very happy with them. I did a lot of research last year, as well known brands continually change their source of manufacture and design....not that there is anything wrong with that....and decided to try one out. Bought two more later. They also have a lifetime warranty !

Thanks guys, I may have to wait a little. The Crossfire II is in the price range, and up to over 3k for some models.
Is the crossfire decent for the money ??
I saw several brands [did not get names yet] at Dunhams Sporting Goods for 69.00- 99.00 on sale, but don't want a piece of crap either.

I like Nikon Glass.

"You get what you pay for" !
I agree with this, I'd only add that you should get what you need. With Nikon, Vortex, or any other reputable name brand I think you will get what you pay for.
As we must do with the guns we buy, we need to understand what we want or desire to do with the accessories. I have a fairly inexpensive Barska variable lighted reticle scope on my AR. It works for me, not a top of the line American Sniper item, but I ain't the American Sniper.
Like many of us, I have (and probably will) buy stuff I NEED, but don't REALLY need.
It's Still Fun!

No "sniper" here either, and in no rush. Just want something decent if I decide to hunt.
May get a cheaper one for the .22 first and experiment a little. Don't want to "cheap out" on .44 and have it self destruct in 200 rounds. I'll check out what brands were at SG store and see if there any good in anyone's opinion.
Thanks for all your help.
