I read in at least two previous threads that the ATF sealed all Dan Wesson production records. Forgive me for asking, but what is the purpose for this? (If I had to guess, I would assume that it was to facilitate the federal government's ability to "trace" firearms and establish chain of custody?)
Having said that, what would be the reason for the ATF not to disclose these records to the public, particularly the older records? Is there a stature of limitations? Would this information be subject to a Freedom of Information Act records request? Is there a specific law that prevents the disclosure of such information?
This subject probably been hashed out on this Forum and/or other forums more times than anyone cares to have seen, but I'm curious to know more... especially about the law, or laws, that give(s) the ATF this authority. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it.

IIRC the records were seized when Dan Wesson went out of business. I believe I recall someone saying they had tried to get a look at them under the freedom of info act but was met with indifference. Someone else here probably knows more.
