OK so I have a 41 mag with a serial number starting with the letter "C", a Monson blued 41mag.  I'm looking at a Monson blued 41 mag with a serial number starting with "41B".  What gives?  I thought the letter prefixes were about the only thing that was certain about DW serial numbers, now I'm not sure.confused

The ONLY thing certain about DW serial numbers is that we will NEVER know the whole story. I keep track of them and several guys here have done a great job of categorizing the known characteristics of all the different models, origins, eras, etc.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Yes, the "C" should be the earlier gun. In the latter Monson years and continuing into the Palmer years, they used the caliber designation at the beginning of the s/n.

So 41B will be blued, and 41S will be stainless.

That makes sense CF, and the earlier Monson 741 would be SCxxxxxx as I look at my 741...  cool.
