I just picked up another 15-2 8" VH. It's a great shooter and a perfect carry gun for our endless Alaskan adventures (with enough holster wear on the blueing on the shroud end and cylinder for me not to worry about babying it).The barrel end threads are a bit tight and make it difficult to set the gap but I planned on changing to the 1:12 EWK barrel any way.
Is there any reason not to put a stainless barrel in this?
We're constantly in the field for weeks at a time and I figure the stainless barrel is one less item to worry about as far as corrosion is concerned. Of course everything gets a good cleaning when we're done but all our guns, no matter how careful we are, can stay damp for days at a time.
I know the solution is to get a stainless 744 so PM me if you have one you can spare, but in the meantime are there any down sides to putting the stainless barrel in?
strikes again twice!
Sounds like you have an interesting job. Barrels, shrouds, transfer bars, etc. all are interchangable between stainless and blue. 744 is the way to go IMHO. I am going to tell yousomething but don't hold me responsible for your DWAS. Sounds like you already have it. Gunbroker.com. Any number of beautiful 744's. It is truly a hand cannon and almost indestructable. I have two. One with a scope. I just tried .44 specials and its almost like plinking with a .22. You will have to do curls with it to build up your muscles to fire it lol. please don't hate me for telling you about Gunbroker. Old Dog.

When the .44 first came out it was ported (Power Control). The barrel for using the PC was, I believe, stainless...it sure looks stainless to me. If so, from the factory you got a blued barrel and a stainless barrel to be used on a blued gun.
I have a .22 I've never been happy with the accuracy of. CZ had SS barrels on sale some time ago and I bought 2 of them with the thought a new barrel may solve my problems. Both barrels tightened up before the .006" gap was reached, should have been threaded another turn or two, and both barrels had a tooling mark (flaw) in the forcing cone. I was unimpressed, but it wasn't much $. The nice thing for me using SS barrels is I can tell the original Monson blue barrels from the SS of latter make.
When my .44 was young I bought a 4" BA for it. I tried to cut the forcing cones for the barrels and the 4" swalllowed the tool about half way through the barrel. It was tapered in the right direction and always shot well for me so I didn't worry about it too much. After reading good reports about EWK's products I recently ordered one of his SS 4".44 barrels. It is very nicely made and I plan on ordering some more of them in the future.
