To all take cover when warned, I have worked in the aftermath of many storms.

Be safe and smart!  My prayers go out to all that are suffering with damage and lose of life and home!

I was looking at pics from some of the news stories yesterday, of all the devastation...surprised...those poor people!!cry Some of the folks said they only had about a 15 minute warning, before the tornado was on top of them.

I hope none of our fellow members have been caught up in all that chaos.frown

I live in the direct path of one of the tornados.  It missed my house by 1 mile.  6 people were killed in my county, 2 of them just 2 miles from me.  They were in a 50x10 trailer at 8 p.m.  The trailer is completely gone and so are they.  How could people not know a tornado was coming?  The TV and radio had been talking about it for 3 days.  TV weather reports had been talking and warning people every broadcast.  They even gave the window that you could expect the worst.  I watched the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa on live TV.  I also watched the one that went through N. Birimingham on live TV.  Tower cams in those cities broadcast it.

It would take someone without any sense at all to get caught unaware.  Doppler TV can pinpoint just where and when they will hit.  I think the poor people in these cities hoped to ride it out thinking it wouldn't be too bad.  Cities around here urged people to go to a safe place.  When tornados come with the strength of these it's hard to find a safe place.  I watched TV and knew within 5 minutes when it would be on me.

We are prepared for tornados.  I have a house with a basement under ground for the most part.  In that basement is a safe room.  When we built the house I told the contractor to build a room with reinforced concrete walls and ceiling with a steel door.  When it passed over I was in it with my wife, the dog, her expensive dolls and my guns in the gun safe.  Everybody don't have this but I planned.  I also have a 10Kw propane generator that comes on 20 seconds after the power goes out.  Even my dog knew the weather was bad.  She was in my arms the whole time and she doesn't usually want me to hold her.  She is old and completely deaf but she knew.  I have taught her hand signals and we talk.  lol.

One of the deaths was one of my classmates.  She lived with her sister on Lake Martin.  All that is left is a bunch of pine stumps, not even debris.  Her sister was blown into the lake and my classmate is "mangled" to the point noone views her body.  I'm guessing she was so drunk she had no pain.  She was known to take a nip or two.

It's pretty sad the death and damage to property but that's the hand we are dealt as humans on this earth.  Other areas have their problems as bad as ours.

I'm glad your house was spared Hossman & that you are safe.

I guess the people who said they only had 15 minutes warning must have spent the previous days locked in a closet.screwy Lake Martin must be one of the towns that the news described as having been "wiped off the map"...the pics sure back up that description.frown

Lake Martin is a lake.  It has a shoreline of 750 miles and the dam produces electricity.  It's about 8 mile from my house.  I'm guessing the city about wiped off the map is Tuscaloosa, the home of the University of Alabama where Bear Bryant coached back in the day.  The path of the tornado followed some pretty flat land so few of the houses had basements.  My good friend had some tree damage and roof on his barn was blown off.  He lives in a double wide.  About 5 years ago he had one of those ball shaped fiberglass storm shelters buried in his yard.  They are not very big but safe.  He and his wife and two 100 pound dogs got in it that night about 20 minutes before it hit.

Yep we are getting hammered this season.. oh wait the biggest month for tornados is May.. and it isn't even May yet.

I was so tired from lack of sleep due to the weather rattling the windows for two days that I took wednesday afternoon off to take a nap. Nothing bad this time in our little town. Though they made us workers sit in the hall for a few hours. Fun Fun.

"April showers bring May flowers" as the saying goes... unless the flowers are blown away says I.

Soap Box, Ballot Box, Ammo Box

in that order.

Glad you have no damage other than you nerves.  I figured the reason Alabama is having so many storms is that you were sending them this way.  I love Doppler radar.

Hossman – glad you are okay and did some planning.

Sorry you lost some friends and neighbors.

Our next home will have one of these generators....I'm having a hard time finding someone to put a conversion kit on my gas one.

If any of you want to see pictures of the tornado damage on Lake Martin (Alabama) copy and paste this.  There are a lot of them.

photohause, go to your propane dealer who sells Generac generators and ask them who they use to install the propane generators.  The same guy should be able to get a trasfer switch and hook you up to your gas generator.

Hoss, thanks for that pic link. Those are some really cool pics from the air, they give a much better idea of how selective the tornado's destruction was.

BTW, that lake looks like a beautiful area to live.smile

This is the most desired lake in Alabama to build a lake home.  You can drink the water.  I was raised on this lake.  My dad was a hydro operator.  He worked at the dam for 37 years so I was a river rat.

This area is where the Creek Indian Nation was located on the Tallapoosa River.  Everything has indian names, mostly cities.  Kowaliga is an area on the lake where Hank Williams, Sr. (country singer back in the '50s) wrote the song "Kowaliga"  This is also where the tornado crossed the lake.

Picture 66 is a picture of where my classmate ('58 class) lived with her sister.  Both were killed.  The sister was found floating in the lake.  A double funeral will be held on Monday.
