Does anyone know if the SM frames are beefed up more than the non-SM frames? And was there any difference in the SM barrel vs. the non- SM barrels.I know the cylinder is longer. Elgin Gates wanted to beef up the cylinder lock I think when he started making the SM CTG. The SM no doubt were going to be shooting 1000s of rounds. Gates and Dan Wesson worked together a lot on creating a silhouette pistol. The non-SM frames shot 1000s of rounds too. The ctg. were loaded to the max too. Any ideas? Thanks, Gary.

The barrels are definitely beefed up on the SM. CF, I think, has some cool pics of a 357 SM barrel and shroud next to a 357 barrel and shroud. The SM is easily larger. I'm not certain if the SM frame is larger/stronger than the larger frames. It's obviously larger than the small frames.

I'm curious about that. As for my 44 mag barrel and my 445 SM barrel they seem to mic out to the same dimensions and barrel twist. Gates had a terrible time with other gun manufacturers trying to get them to make a silhouette pistol. Dan Wesson listen though and I know there were some mods but I don't know if it was only for the SM series.

To the best of my knowledge Super-mag frames are merely lengthened large frames, According to Keith at DW, 44 and 445 barrels interchange and I believe 41 and 414 do also. 357 mag and 357 max or super-mag obviously do not, but you cross from a small frame to a super-mag frame. The 375 has no Large frame counterpart. I suspect the rare 360 will swap with the 357 max as well as the 45 and the 460 Roland but that is a guess on my part. Others feel free to jump in and correct my thoughts if I miss spoke.

Interesting barrels mike out the same. Do your 44 & 445 barrel interchange between frames? I thought that I'd read that DW changed barrel threads for the supermag, into the frame only or barrel nut too?, for supermags.
Ibruce references swapability.
Can 44 shrouds pin to a supermag frame, over an appropriate sm barrel?
oh oh am I spiralling into a DW purchase ......

Yes my .44 and .445 mic out the same, but the threads going into the frame only screwed in about a 1/4 inch. The .44 frame was a Monson and the 445 barrel was a Palmer. Palmer changed out the tooling dies etc when they bought the company. I assume there could be a little difference in the thread angle ie., only by a fraction or maybe the rounds shot in the 445 barrel could have stressed the frame thread groves in a fraction of a way. The barrel nuts and threads were the same on the 44 mag and 445 SM. I think L.B. said, "the 445 shroud would would would fit on the 44 mag frame but not vice-versa." I will check it out. Thanks L.B. for the information.

You are welcome.
All super-mag shrouds will fit on a large frame but the large frame shroud on a super-mag frame will not allow the cylinder to close due to the length of the ejector rod. Also a few DWs have two alignment pins, but you can remove one pin and keep on trucking.
