Insights from folks that get to see, first hand, the results of different tyles of amunition on the human body. I thought it might be of general interrest.

Interesting read, but aftergoing over the entire thing I have a few observations. First, the 41 mag is ballistically almost identical (if not superior) to 44 mag. Second, in summer in North America, its hard to conceal a 1911 in shorts and tee shirt, so any gun you can carry trumps what is at home in the safe. I was surprized that he didn't mention the Tarus Judge 410 and larger, while an ungainly piece, they do make big holes, and the shot spreads out nicely too.
After going thru the whole article, I almost want to make a 2" BA for my 445 Super Mag and carry that.
For a home defense gun, a 3 1/2" 12Ga mag loaded up with 00 Buck is hard to beat. Don't have to be real accurate to hit a BG from almost any effective range, and having 5-7 rounds to play with is also good.
How many of you guys carry extra ammo with you for your carry gun? What does the law have to say about reloading?

The question I was asking on reloading was menat to say, what does the law say about carrying extra ammo and reloading the gun after you exhaust its magazine? I've heard of some cases that were self defense until it became known that the defender carried extra ammo, then charges were changed to manslaughter. Just wondering what the actual law says about carrying two or three mags. Sort of makes it look like you are expecting a fire fight. I've also heard the same thing about cocking a revolver and firing single action. Makes it look planned or something like that. I'd hope that two or three shots would end it.
I honestly don't know many places in public where I could feel comfortable firing 20+ rounds without hazzarding others.

The answer to this question may have more to do with where you live than anything else. In my area you must be able to explain that you felt that your life or the lives of others were in danger before using deadly force. That a reasonable person would have acted as you did. I have never heard of the subject of extra Mags coming up. I have many friends on different departments so I will bring up your question. Some years ago an officer friend told me if I carried what the police did I would be in good grounds in court. Makes sense. R S

Personally I will vote for the 45 too, for conceal. But give me a 357 in a gun fight. As I have shot 45 out to 100 yards + and seen the absolute laughable power it has beyond 50 yards. Close quarters combat with a 75 yard limit, and penetration sucks to if your perpetrator dives behind a wall or a car even at close range. 357 will go threw that wall or car, and then threw the perpetrator with a 158 or heavier. 357 will offer a shooting solution beyond 150 yards too. You just can't have your cake and eat it too...lol. I would look at what you think you will be going up against, and choose the tool to get it done. As for large magnums if you can deal with the bulk, weight and shot to shot recoil delay, go for it as nothing says Make My Day then a hand cannon.

Side note: I carry a Gov 1911 without a holster, Magnum P.I. style. I have found if you put it in the middle of your cheek, and run a soft rubber grip: that will use the skin of back for grip: and a loose t-shirt, shirt or jacket like one or two sizes over to cover the bulge that is in your pocket area seems to work out very well for over the past 100 years. Besides if they see a outline of a full size 1911 do you think you are going to be their next victim...LOL!!!

As promised I talked to some of my police officer friends and this what I was told about the amount of ammo you carry.
1. If you can justify the shooting then the amount of ammo is unimportant.
2. Sense the police carry 50 to 60 on their person any lawyer worth his salt can throw out consideration of amount of ammo carried.
3. The most important thing is to be alive after an attack, do what it takes to not be a dead victim. . R S
