1000' feet above the Louisiana coast between Sabine Pass and Johnsons Bayou in a AS355, N5802B. The flight following guy blurted it out on the radio. Probably 30 aircraft on frequency and there was absolute silence for at least 2 minutes. I guess I remember.
An aside, While on active duty in 1982, I was fortunate enough to fly security for ST3's (columbia) landing at WSMR. We got to see that one land from the edge of the runway.

It sure doesn't seem that long ago, wow!
I was at work, age 22. The radio
station we were listening to broke in from the music program with the
news. One of my fellow employees ran home & grabbed his TV, so we
could watch what happened.
A Sad day, indeed.
Also, this is a time to remember the crew of Columbia, who upon re-entry, never made it home on February 1st, 2003. That day really seems as though it was just yesterday. I wasn't at work, but at home & just finished dinner...I was alerted to the disaster as I watched the evening news & can remember thinking that they were burning up as they crossed over my head just a couple hours before. I wish I could have helped, somehow.
The Columbia patch...
The Challenger crew...
Jody, thanks for finding Reagan's full address.
I remember seeing it live that evening. So much of that excellent & heartfelt speech has been chopped up & shortened through the years. As a result, as always, that only devalues the true heart of the feelings delivered that day. I don't think another President since then would have (or could have) conveyed those same universal American emotions. He was the last truly PRESIDENTIAL President I can remember. If only Regan was still at the helm during 9/11...well, I'll stop there.
R.I.P., crew of Columbia.

I was working as an engineer for a defense electronics contractor in southern New Hampshire. As I was on the production floor, we watched the launch on nearby television screens because Christa McAuliffe was well known in our community.
Then as the disaster unfolded in front of our eyes, several employees wept and left the production floor to get their kids, who were former students of Christa in nearby Concord, NH.
Sad times for NH and the rest of the country. I still remember the official State visit of people to the McAuliffe household. We honored her by remembering her courage and accomplishments. Live on Christa!!! She was one of Concord's finest!
it really doesn't seem like it's been 25 years since that day.
i was at work in a audio/video store. it was a very cold day, the heat wasn't working, and we were freezing, then we saw what happened on our telivisions and all of a sudden our personal problems didn't seem to be so important compared to what happened in florida.
