It came in the mail today:
Eric and I have been kicking this around for a while, it's inspired by a clamp on mount no longer made, but there are some very nice upgrades/improvements. It clamps onto the top strap over the cylinder, and has a 4.5" Picatinny rail installed (no special rings required). This mount is designed to allow your rear sight to remain installed and in place with no adjustment.
Once the side clamps are in place, the mount is secured with 3 setscrews that tighten down from the top and apply secure pressure against the top strap.
Eric has the set screws in a three point configuration that gives a very solid, stable mounting. The picatinny rail is secured with the two larger screws, allowing different length rails to be installed.
I had a chance to install this mount on my 715 4VH, with a Burris FastFire, it took about 2 minutes to install. The 4.5" rail provides plenty of mounting space for scope rings for just about any scope.
This mount weighs 5.9 oz., I like the fact that the weight is placed above the cylinder rather than out front on the barrel. Fit and finish on this is flawless, and the engineering is perfectly thought out. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that this will work on other brand revolvers that are similarly sized.
Exactly what I was hoping for, and more. Eric hit this one out of the park!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Great pictures and writeup Steve!
Right on about the length of the rail, I figured with the longer one it should be able to handle any scope out there, and with a shorter rail, it would be perfect for the fast fire.
If you notice too, the setscrews are brass tipped...and there are holes drilled through the rail to allow the allen wrench to engage the setscrews...no need to remove the rail to install or remove the mount!

This is about a 90 second install, rear sight is untouched. I really like having it mounted over the cylinder and closer to the grip. Much better balance than on the barrel, at least for me.

Prolly about $75...wish they could be cheaper, but there is ALOT of work that goes into making them.
Just the small frame...I'm pretty sure, that is what I was working off of for the prototype, but they are of course scaleable to just about anything. Not sure on the 12's, don't have one of them...Steve?

From eyeballing pics of the W12 vs the 15-2, I see what Steve is talking about. The sight area of the early frames is more pronounced. Could be a tough fit.
Still, I'm in for one. Given Eric's quality and the price used stuff gets bid to, $75 sounds very reasonable to me.

Eric,
I don't think $75.00ish is too much. It's easy to tell the amount of work involved. I'm hoping stailess will be an option. A buddy gave me a silver finish scope he didn't want. That set up will be an eyecatcher at the range. I agree with Steve about location. Keeping as much mass as possible back over the cylinder is a good thing. I'll be looking forward to ordering one.

PS, your wrench worked like a champ on my carbon locked 715.

Steve,
Did you try shooting it yet?It looks like scope would be mounted kind of
high.walt
No I haven't shot it yet. I agree that the scope will be pretty high above the bore axis, which is the problem I've always had with the B-square mounts. Too much parallax outside the POA, but the purpose of this mount for me is to put a red dot on for use with my 722. I have the FastFire mounted and sighted in for my Buckmark, and I will shoot that thru the iron sights as well. It just comes off the rail and goes back on, irons and holo sights never get adjusted so I'm always sighted in.
I'm planning to set my 722 up the same way, I shoot a LOT of .22 lr at my local club.
