This is how the converstation started at the local gun shop when I asked to look at the DW 15-2 (asking $250). The gentleman stated that the only good thing Dan Wesson did was/is making a really nice 1911. Everything else is junk.

I told him if the 15-2 was junk and he wanted to get rid of it I would give him $50 out the door and he wouldnt have to look at it anymore. Well that went over about as well as a turd in a punch bowl.

I am hoping they will have it in a week when my buddy who is the manager gets back from vacation. Maybe we can cut a deal. It was just too funny not to post here.

I got a few old timers around up my way like that. Good I say, keeps

prices very affordable.

It's fine with me if lots of people have that opinion of Dan Wesson revolvers, it cuts down my competition for a decent deal. Funny thing around here is, nobody even seems to know Dan Wesson makes 1911s, I have never seen one and the couple times I mentioned them in gun shops they looked at me like I was stupid or something.

I've found most gun shop people are dumber than a box of rocks.

I understand your emotional reaction, and I applaud you for protecting the DW Heritage.

But, these days, if I see a decent looking 15-2 for $250, I BUY IT!

I'd have hit him with $200 out the door, and if it works, I win, he loses!

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

At a gun show a few weeks back in Ventura, CA, I asked a vendor with lots of bins of various parts if he had anything for Dan Wesson revolvers.  He answered, "Those suicide guns?"  I told him I thought they're very well engineered and if he had anything he wanted to dump (for safety reasons, of course) well, let me know.

I neglected (until this thread came along) to post that little exchange on the Forum, so that I could ask you more knowledgable DW operators if you've ever heard them referred to so disparagingly?  Are you aware of any reason or evidence that would cause that kind of response?

Best,

A lot of people have strong prejudices which make them say ridiculous things that are patently untrue.  These are uneducated people who don't do their homework. yell

A friend of mine asked me why I collect Dan Wessons.  He said they aren't collectable, said they wern't worth what a Colt Python was.  I told him that to a Colt collector a Dan may not be collectable, but they are also alot less expensive and I can collect several for the same price.  I used the stock market analogy, you want to buy low and sell high, not the other way around.  I also told him that everything is collectable to somebody.  Saw a local new article the other day where a guy is collecting old milk bottles.  To me they aren't collectable but to him...  To each his own.

I also don't think I could live long enough to ever hope to be able to have a complete Smith and Wesson collection, but a DW collection, maybe.

Agree with you lonwolf93 most gun shops around here are clueless about Dan Wessons, revolver or 1911s.  Only the place in Myerstown seems to ever have any used ones, and they are usually VERY used.

Anything worth doing is worth doing well.

Best,

I have a few thoughts:

1) Dan Wesson revolvers are still only appreciated by those of us who stumble on the largely by accident (me, many years ago), or because they are very informed revolver shooters who have discovered the inherent strength and accuracy of the DW design

2) The modern Dan Wesson "brand" is largely recognized by informed 1911 shooters. Dan Wesson has developed from being relatively unknown in the 1911 world to becoming a premiere "factory custom" 1911. It is the niche between Kimber/SA/... quality factory offerings, and the bottom end Les Baer/Wilson/... customs

3) Your gunshop guy is looking at a pricetag on a DW revolver that says "less than $1000" and the DW 1911's that all say "well over $1000", and has decided that anything Dan Wesson for $200/300/400 must be junk.

Thanks for enduring the rant, but anyone that dumps on any Dan Wesson revolver is, well, money in the bank for you.

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I was actually more surprised that he had anything at all good to say about DW weather it was a 1911 or a revolver.

pokepoke  go back and offer 150 tell him you thought about and didn't want the owner to see that pos in the rack when he returned, you could say I need one that might be good for shooting snakes or some bs.  never know he may jump on it!  With CZ in Kansas City, I am seeing more 1911's show up, though have yet to see thew 715.

Most just don't know what they have I try to inform and educate. a guy has a 715 not greatest shape said it is nickle plated, I looked it over and told him looked more Stainless to me and I wasn't aware DW made many nickle in this model.  he said the guy he bought from said it is nickle.  At 475 I let it lay!  May go back to today and offer 400  on it just so he doesn't have to look at any more!

A couple of years ago I bought what was clearly a 14-2 that had been nickel plated but was being sold as stainless. Model noted on the CT Transfer paperwork by the gun shop that sold it was Model 714

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

Because everytime I have brought up DW or asked to look at a DW I usaully get comments like  " What you couldnt afford a Smith?" or " Yeah I have heard they are only good for paper weights."

It was just strange to hear some one comment on the postive side of a DW other then on here is all I was trying to get at.

Gotcha, thought you left out some of the conversation. You could definitely

use that to your advantage. Good response would be " Yea I already got one

of these POS I just need some parts, what would you sell me this parts gun

for ?"

The last DW I bought was so mint I asked the kid behind the counter if it had been re-blued. He handed it to the old guy behind the counter and asked him. The older guy frowned and stated" Naw Dan Wesson never had good finish" then handed it back to the kid. I just smiled and lowered my offer and brought the paper weight (AKA mint model 14-2)  home. wink

I have heard some gun store guys say, "All the DWs I see are broke." Duh!! Well you are a gunsmith what do you think. They don't bring you working guns. Nothing last for ever. Ignorance is Bliss.

It's because of views like this that keep the prices of local DW's cheap!  Of course I disagree with his opinion but certainly like to get a good deal.

"easy there, fellas, any more realistic talk and folks might not be able to keep thinking the Dan Wesson is a ticking time bomb made of ill-fitting Chinese parts and Brazilian duct tape!"
