Interestingly enough, last night we were at a local High School football game. The PA announcer stated that "due to circumstances beyond their control, the National Anthem would not be sung". Evidently the soloist did not appear.
As the announcer continued his pre-game, the ref's began getting the teams ready for kickoff, etc., a few people started to sing. Finally all the officials and players caught on to what was happening, as all the three hundred or so spectators were on their feet singing the National Anthem.
Hats and helmets came off, hands went over the heart, and an enormous cheer went up as the National Anthem was completed.
At least in this instance, it was not part of the pre-game performance, it was an affirmation of our pride in America, heartfelt and genuine. Usually that big cheer at the end means "Let the Game begin", but not this time!
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

This country is like a house hold. The kids fight with each other, Mom and Dad have disagreements. No matter what is going internally. When something threatens the family, we all band together. Remember 9/11. White, Black, Asian, Hispanic, Irish, Democrat, Republican etc. We bound together as Americans. Old crippled Vets were wanting to fight. No matter what. I had never seen so many flags displayed in my lifetime. House holds were saying to the world, come get some. When the chips hit the fan we stand together. It was stated once that an outside force did not just have our military to worry about. It was the citizens as well. When our air craft carriers were headed over sea's. I remember they allowed pilots to put messages on their missles. And they had not been allowed to do that in years. Down the line you saw painted on them, NYPD, NYFD, NRA. I loved that one. During that week I was in shock as a lot of Americans were. I was angry. But I stayed calm for my family. But the straw that broke the camels back and still brings tears to my eyes was when I saw an American College girl in England who could not get home because flights were cancelled standing outside the airport clutching an American Flag and weeping into it. I went into my basement and pounded on an old punching bag till my knuckles bled. Weeping like a baby. Thank god the wife and kids were out shopping. I could not let them see old cast iron dad crying. Sorry for being long winded. But this is still the greatest country on this planet. We have our faults, sure. But we are still the best.
