I just added another Dan to the collection and this one my first stainless. So a picture with the other two that are nickle which I think is the bomb. This Dan seems to be in between satin and polished. I'm thinking about 80% or so. Here they are dressed sorta alike.

What was SS factory finish? Any opinions.

I did some searches on satin versus polished, I think DW stainless is satin, which seems to include a very faint appearance of "brush" marks and less highly reflective

I'd say that both the Colt and Smith in your picture are "polished"

I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman "Were is the Self Help Section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

I just recently picked up a Palmer Stainless myself.  It's a pretty smooth 'satin' finish and would polish up nicely.  The can of "Mother's Mag Polish" has been calling my name.   It's only right that she should out shine the others!   dwf

It would be tough to polish a stainless gun to match a nickle finished gun, but you could probably get close. Just be careful to not over polish the S/N stamps on the frame, to where they might look deformed.

BTW, congrats on your newly acquired 714, it's a beauty!!drool

Since this idea of polishing metals is becoming more than a passing fancy with the goal of eventually using the method that Colt used which is Electroless Nickel Plating some firearms.

I have found some sites that coincide with things I have picked up in the past which is do it by hand. The German Industry would not let metal turning apprentices touch any machinery until they did it all by hand with a file first.

Here a is a page that does a good job of describing this fella's method although the use of dremels and such is where most folks get in trouble.

I have some pics of my learning the art of making things shine...
